Thanks, J!
Jonathan will let us know if he is pelted with nubile maidens, and finds at least one of them acceptable? Not if he's got any sense, he won't! *naughty* |

I did phone the minicab firm, and asked about the system that sends one car out to two customers, and locks the doors... and their cars are always the same five minutes late. The man who answered the phone is a grown-up with a share in the business. He found my booking made half an hour in advance, and said when he sends a car out, it's five minutes early.
He also said he would investigate. I don't know what he'll find or what he plans to do, but I'll find out soon enough, next time I make a booking.
One of their drivers was killed by a fare a few weeks ago, so perhaps they're frightened. I wouldn't blame them. There may come a time when they will be surrounded by glass, like London black cab drivers. I hope it won't happen, but it may have to.
I also phoned Tesco to "express my disappointment" in a couple of purchases, and have been promised a £5 gift card in the post in the next seven to ten days. Whoopee. I can hardly wait! |

Talking about guidance, I was planning to spend a few months minicabbing between courses, and for the only time in my life got points on my licence (disputed but not worth a court case as could have got more if lost), and the policeman who took my licence said it was probably a good thing as the number of minicab drivers they had reporting attacks it was better not to risk it and wasn't able to with points. Without looking in my diary I can't remember what work I took instead but never forgot his advice. I did the identical work twice delivering things instead of people which was safer but incredibly lonely work as I spent 9-10 hours a day only seeing receptionists for a few seconds besides the odd trips to base. My father came with me once but don't think I could borrow anyone for the day more than that.

| I remember, you said you got to know the streets of London like the back of your hand, by being White Van Man. |

Nice wedding, lots of people I knew, some I didn't but got to know, lots of food, and I had two glasses of champagne, which is two glasses more than I normally have.

Well least you sound as though you enjoyed yourself, which is what you so deserve.

None half as deserving as you, Lesley, with all the problems you've dealt with!

Thank you both - but I think everyone's got something to deal with. I have yet to meet a grown-up who didn't have a story to tell.
Oh and I wasn't really squiffy - just pleasantly relaxed. :) |

Spent most of today on the phone, sorting out money things, including quotes for insuring a car I haven't bought. On average, it takes an hour prodding buttons and listening to bad music, to yield ten minutes of productive phone time.
Tomorrow I am hopping on a train to see the car. Jonathan will hop on the same train. I hope we shall be driving back.
And then I shall be driving to Hendon on Friday.
Happy Passover/Easter everyone. Back soon. :) |

I wish you luck getting it in time. If nothing else the petrol costs must be a fraction of the Jag, unless it's another Jag of course ;)

Thank you! Yes, there are beautiful old Jags on the market for £500. Problem is, they'd cost £500 a month to run. They'd be a joy if they never needed MOTs or repairs. And there are beautiful new Jags for not much more. Get thee behind me, temptation.
We didn't go - we decided it was silly to go that far. I/we shall look without pressure. Public transport it will continue to be. For now. *sigh* |

Thank you for the invitation, Gary. :) (I shall check your blog for health news.)
Shouldn't be too difficult to find something down the road. There's a limit to how long I can keep sane for, outside London, with no car. I've done it before, and it's very wearing.
I miss being able to pop out whenever I feel like it, without relying on charity, or the disgusting bus "service" from Stagecoach, or a fiver each way for minicabs. And I'm back to fuming when shop staff say "if it's not right, just bring it back... " or "Pop in next time you're passing." I don't do popping in. I do expeditions.
Grrr! :D |

The only thing worse than car shopping, is bra shopping! When you pick one, it's the one you'll have forever so...No rush. Put it on the boat and I'll meet you in New York! ;) Then we'll break it in nicely, driving across country...Road Trip!

When my car was written off I was given about a week to find a new one before they took what was left of it away (it drove but was bent). I knew the alternative options, made a list, looked online and found what I wanted first time from the same garage down the road where I test drove it and had my car serviced sometimes as they were my main dealers. I went in the next day, forgot my new pin number (they'd just changed it but I'd forgotten) and had to get my father to pay on the phone, the car was 6 years old and done 1900 miles. They had another automatic but I preferred the manual and the mileage on it so paid a bit more. I think it's more important to get a car from a reliable source than any other details, as whatever goes wrong they will usually fix it and unlikely to sell anything dodgy in the first place. Mine sold me one where 2nd gear packed up within a week or two and they had to take it in and put in a new gearbox as that was the guarantee. You can't get that from a private sale of course however decent the car looks- one I bought turned out to have been welded back after an accident, and split when I had to put it on the jack, and another blew the engine after a few weeks and I had to pay for a replacement.

YAY road trip!
Thanks, David but there's no way I'd buy privately ... in case you were thinking I might!
It was a nice idea while it lasted, a train journey with the beloved child, but there are better reasons for driving 120 miles than getting a car - and better ways of getting a car!
When I lived in Wembley, I went to central London to look for a jacket. I knew more or less what I wanted, but half the jackets I saw were rubbish, and the other half were the price of a small island. Came home, stepped off the bus in Wembley High Road, came face to face with a jacket that was exactly what I wanted. I'm rather hoping the Car Fairy will make the same thing happen with a car. |
