In theory there will be members of parliament and local council employees who are passionate about helping their community. In practice... I have no idea.
Yes, ta, it was a lovely concert, over all too quickly. |

Thanks, Gary - and the sooner the better, I think. Here's a heart-warming extract from the latest exchange of emails.
Them: "I can confirm the computer programmer does not select the substitutions, these are selected by the computer system itself using what is known as a matrix system."
My thoughts: Oh is it really? Blind me with science, why don't you! Are you being deliberately patronising, or are you just parroting from a script? So the computer thinks for itself, and no thinking, rational humans were consumed in the development of this - um - matrix system?
My actual reply: "OK, I'm being pedantic here, but the computer uses software that has been developed by programmers. There is, therefore, some human input - and it's tempting to suggest that it's from humans who have never been shopping."
He didn't acknowledge my comment that giving the milk back to the driver would have left me without milk, which would mean I would have to go out for milk and, if I'm going out for milk, I may as well not bother shopping online. He did, however, concede that the milk they sent me was an unsuitable substitution, and said that this feedback had been passed on.
It's progress - and a massive waste of energy. Must do something useful.
I'll have one more go. Third time lucky, or three strikes and you're out. |

You are more patient then i would be Lesley, I will be doing my shop either friday or saturday. as road will be done by then.
I am hoping that the rat pack show plays near me soon this year, having watched a dvd of London show i would like to see it live.
The 3 guys singing as Sinatra, Martin and Sammy Davis were very good and the banter between them it seems was like the real men did years ago in vegas.

No, I'm not that patient. If I were, I'd accept whatever they threw at me, shrug and do something else.
I don't accept patronising non-explanations, which is why I'm bashing away at the office drones, in the hope of getting something outside the corporate script.
"I do hope that this will be able to help you in this matter, and I hope that you continue to enjoy shopping with us."
We're only pretending to be interested. Just stop moaning and carry on spending.
"I hope this has been of assistance and I apologise for any inconvenience caused."
Just believe the pseudo-science I give you, and stop acting like you matter.
She show sounds like fun! |

"In theory there will be members of parliament and local council employees who are passionate about helping their community. In practice..."
In practice, I'd say the vast majority get carried away with self-importance and/or greed.
I'm not very patient myself. "Stop reading your damned script and bring back the time when the customer was important (was that ever... uh... done?) Of course, I'm willing to acknowledge there will be places that place a high value on their customers, but this would seem to be the minority. **Another rant over so I can save them for my new *blog.

Ooh you could have a blog devoted entirely to rants. That would be fun!
I have been known to ask people if they have to "go through all that" every time they pick the phone up.
"Good morning no sorry I mean good afternoon thank you for phoning {company} home of the best products in the universe, {name} speaking how may I help you today?"
Obviously the answer is yes or they would never go to all that bother, but most of them appreciate the show of sympathy. |

Just stumbled upon a quote I hadn't seen before, and thought it sums up perfectly what's happened to modern education. The man was a visionary!
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is s*upid.”

Bank holiday Monday, day trip to Milton Keynes, land of concrete cows. Jealous yet? Milton exciting Keynes? They've got an IKEA!
A friend with a 14yo daughter was taking a friend who needs clothes, and incidentally has a 13yo daughter, and would I like to come along for the ride? Well yes. How could I resist. It transpired that the woman who arranged the trip asked me because I've faced problems like the one the other woman is facing now and she thought I might be able to reassure her that This Too Shall Pass.
Question: how much do I want to revisit the past, in the hope of convincing someone that it will be OK? |

A conspiracy? Seems to me the woman who arranged it should have spoken to you first to gauge how receptive you'd be about reliving your past. Sounds like it was a really fun trip for the teens. ;)

Would have been nice, wouldn't it? She did give me a thumbnail picture of mother and daughter, but I didn't once think ooh that's just like me/us. All I thought was that she was justifying taking them out.
In fact, there were a fair number of similarities, and I was able to say, for instance, that my son had had the same sort of surgery she had in January, in the same place - did it work? - yes... I have a couple of pictures of him on my phone...
So I was pleased to have had a reassuring effect on the mother - the two daughters wandered off to chat and eat and shop by themselves - but still feel faintly uncomfortable about the way is happened. I think you're right, wyambezi. It was about being used, albeit for very good reason, without being asked.
Unless of course I take a leaf out of Dave Pelzer's - er - book, and make lots of money doing it. Now there's a thought! Will you lot still talk to me when I'm rich and famous? |

I'm glad the girls had a good time. I was afraid they wouldn't be allowed off by themselves and would have to endure all the serious talk. I suppose it's a sort of compliment to be thought of in order to help someone, but it would bother me that I wasn't asked about it first. It has a ring of disrespect to it.

The girls seemed very happy. As soon as we landed, they were given money for lunch, sent on their way, and told to phone in in an hour's time - which they did, and hourly after that, on the dot. They bought clothes and a pack of two friendship bracelets, and seemed very relaxed and cheerful.
Thank you, everyone, but I'm really not going anywhere. |
