So Judy, I made 2 + 2 = 5? I recovered from mine well, eventually. I was in recovery, still sedated, when my blood pressure plummeted. It transpired that valve hadn't been sewn in properly, so it was leaking, and they had to take me back into theatre and do it all again. On balance, I think I'm pleased that I didn't know what happened till afterwards. I'm rather hoping that it won't happen again this time, but I've had so much luck with my health, nothing's much of a surprise now.
Thanks, Gary. I'll let you know what he says tomorrow evening. |

Today my New Gardener (!) came, and I took the car off the drive to give him free run with the weedkiller. I haven't driven for a couple of months, and I miss it, so it was rather nice just to drive it 20 feet and go outside later to bring it back in again. Did I mention that my world was shrinking? :)
Jonathan will be doing the driving tomorrow. |

The gardner said 'thank you' for moving the car...It's nice to keep in touch with the pedals and buttons though, yes? :) Tell Jonathan to drive safely. Have fun!

Thank you, I had a really good day.
All the travelling went well. Sandy picked Jonathan up from the station at around noon, in time for lunch (I swear he has hollow legs) and he did all the driving. There's something about Papworth hospital that we noticed: the staff smile, and look pleased to be there. Bedford staff can't wait to go home.
The surgeon is the same man who gave me my first replacement valve in January 1997. He told me the types of valve available - mechanical, human, bovine and porcine - and helped me choose. He actually said "It's your choice," and I said "Help!" He went through them again, and led me gently towards a mixture of bovine tissue with Dacron. It'll last longer than a human one, it won't tick and I shan't need Warfarin.
The op will probably be in 6 - 8 weeks, which is some time during the first half of July. It's expected to take 4 - 6 hours and I'm expected to be in for about ten days.
He also talked about the risks... but we don't want to think about those. We have to know about them, but it's not like I have a choice. Well, I do, but not much of one!
When we'd finished, I asked him about driving. He said, as I wasn't fainting or having dizzy spells, it would be all right for me to drive short distances. Not long distances, as that would be tiring. If I feel the beginnings of faintness or dizziness - don't. This was a perfect answer, because I don't want to drive long distances - I just want to be able to get to local things, like post office, shops, surgery, even concerts! without relying on friends and public transport. I feel tremendously liberated.
When we got back, I fed Jonathan (again), and then, O joy of joys, gave him a lift to the station. |

Smile? I almost danced! :)
Thanks, Deunan.
Where did you find that thing? Are you sure it's a car? |

Oh wonderful Lesley.
I can feel you vibrating happiness! :D
How nice be able to just pop around for shopping or a cuppa - or any little thing that takes your fancy.
And a choice! Hugs to the specialist for being a Real Person.
And the hospital too - sounds like a perfect place for a recovery. :)
Daddy's Girl used to drive a Smart Car - it was a work issue. Bit scary sitting in it in traffic - wouldn't want to take it on the Freeway, but for local it was brilliant to run around in - and she has her eye on a four-door convertible. All we need is a local dealer so it doesn't need to go to Sydney for it's 5,000k services.
Cute little cars - and they come in great colour combos.
The mini might be just the thing Lesley, especially with a heated spa option! lol

Lesley, I'm glad you had a nice day and all went well. Also great news to hear you are able to drive short distances :) Things are looking up!
Ha ha about the mini cooper. I love those cars too -- not sure about the pool with the girl in it though... maybe Lesley could handle it if Wayne was in the back instead ;)

Wayne was on special offer from Squisher, if I bought the car with the pool. I don't know what I've let myself in for, but it sounds like fun. :)
I'm really pleased with my haircut, and Sandy and I were a good double act, talking about all sorts of things, and we had all the stylists and customers joining in. (That doesn't work everywhere!) And there was none of the standard hairdresserspeak bilge, like "Going anywhere nice tonight/this weekend/in your holidays?" I think it's a condition of employment in there that they know how to conduct real conversation.
They were talking about the beauty shop next door, because it has new management. I didn't know the old management. But I went in and asked about dying eyelashes. I thought I'd treat myself to another haircut, and have my eyelashes dyed, before I went into hospital. The receptionist did an allergy test, and said the beautician would be able to tell me how long the dye would last. The beautician came out between customers; a young woman with solid black eyebrows and an orange face. Why is it that almost everyone who works with cosmetics and beauty treatments has an orange face? |
