I can confirm Lesley's OK in case she doesn't get here for a while to say it herself. I do feel a bit alone at the moment as since it's got dark early I've had a lot more time here and been posting a lot, and hardly anyone else has for days. That wouldn't have happened on the other blogs...

Thank you all, specially David - how lovely to be missed.
I have had a lot of things to do, and too many things to think about, but that's not why I haven't written. I have been writing here for the pleasure of chatting. On the early threads in this board, and the early pages of this thread, there were a lot of people who came over from the real blogs, but most of them have given up. If its just me putting up post after post, if it feels like I'm writing a diary, it stops being fun, and I may as well just buy a paper diary.
No, it wouldn't have happened in the real blogs. That was its own little community. These things aren't the same. |

I have no idea what The Blogs were like before. I've tossed around the idea of starting one here, but I talk to my boring self too much already, so I sort of understand where you're coming from (except you're not boring! lol).
Regardless, rest assured that several folks DO read yours every week (even if they don't comment - mea culpa!) because you write so well and have a great sense of humour. So, yeah, some people miss you when you don't post : )

Thank you both, I'm beaming now. Not only tua culpa - quite a lot of people's culpae!
I've been scribbling away here for a few years, sometimes lightweight anecdotes, sometimes personal revelations that haven't always been easy to make. The more difficult I found them, they less response they got.
I've lost count of the number of people who have said "I know that - I read it in your blog." You don't even know they've read it, but they've read every word... and gone away again.
It's quite dispiriting to know that people tune in regularly, just as they would tune in to a radio programme, read what's there and say, if you catch them, that they enjoy it, but that it was too much trouble to comment, or join in, or just to record their visit.
'Twas not always thus. I had a massive amount of support when I was ill and clutching at straws to try to find out what was wrong. A lot of people joined in when I had a frequent Gentleman Caller who seemed to think that I didn't have a life outside his visits, and there was nothing socially inappropriate about his telling me slightly raw jokes and making salacious suggestions. (I also had a weekly lady caller who thought I needed her. I don't miss her at all.)
I can't be sure what's happened but I have two theories of my own. One is that a mini-community was destroyed when the real blogs went. The other is that over-zealous and patronising moderating has put most of us off writing about anything more interesting than Justin Bieber and sock colours. If you can't have a grown-up debate, and even the word "fart" is censored, why even try?
Or perhaps everyone just yawned and drifted off when I found out what was wrong with me and got repaired, and when I told the Gentleman Caller to sling his hook. So it's mea culpa after all. |

It makes me sad, that you feel that way, Lesley. Not much I can do about it, but I always look for your blog... right after 'Crystal Ball' and lately, you aren't there.
It's different, for you to look, because you need to see if people have commented on what you've already said...I check for everything here, every day...Even if I have nothing to say.
Hope to see you typing away, and imagining what we all think! :)

I am a 'Phantom blog reader'...I look forward to reading your posts Lesley, even though I don't comment very often.
You are warm, witty, caring and make me smile...and that's enough slush for now :)

Thank you, that's very sweet of you both.
The last post I made here, that wasn't anything about talking to myself, was on the 6th, when I'd been to the local hospital for a cardiac check-up, and been pronounced well for another twelve months.
At the same time, I posted a less wordy version on facebook. It's had 32 "Likes," twelve of which were from current and former FT people, and eight FT people contributed to 37 comments. Of course I couldn't help making comparisons. Spot the difference? and the message in the comparison? My telepathy is wearing a bit think these days. I followed that real chat. |

Honestly, Daver, you can't always check in from time to time.
You either always check in at a specific time, or you don't.
hec-hec-hec. I've been waiting for five years to do that. :)

Lesley, I check in often, and always back up to the last post that I've read. I never saw the point to commenting just to 'hear myself talk', so to speak.
Keep it up. It's enjoyable to read about real (as opposed to fiction, or sensational news accounts) life on the other side of the pond :-)

Like Facebook my actual blog has a counter which has recently related to posts as well as daily visits. The old days when it was popular I got 50 hits a day and regular comments. Then they removed the profile links and no one could find each other for a year, and never recovered. But although I hardly ever get comments now (a few a year on it, unlike a few per entry) I do know people read it so keep it going. Here is a total blind faith, and only if you occasionally ask for a roll call we have little or no idea, but I just assume enough people read enough of it to keep mine going, and would recommend everyone to if they have one.

Goodness, where did all these people come from?
Postie, that's an interesting observation:
" commenting just to 'hear myself talk' "
because that's exactly how I have felt, writing into the void!
Early night. I have to practise being up early for people who start work early. Electrician is coming Wednesday morning. He was supposed to be here a fortnight ago. The builder said he'd phone me to confirm, but he didn't, the electrician came and I wasn't here.
Shopping delivery this evening. Amazingly, there were no missing items and no substitutions. The driver was early, pleasant and efficient. I started packing as soon as he'd left. There's a box of a dozen eggs lying on its side, the egg box feels wet, and there's colourless wet sticky all over the contents of the bag. Seven of the eggs are so badly broken that they're leaking.
See how exciting my life is? |
