They do, and I claimed a refund. Today I claimed a refund for some tomatoes that were split and leaking, just like the eggs. Perhaps it's what happens when the food is packed by people who don't understand that light things go on top of heavy things, or the driver is trying to break speed records.
Electrician is supposed to be coming in the morning. When he's finished, I shall be able to put back all the things I took out of the cupboard under the stairs and dumped in the middle of the living room. It's quite surprising how many coats and heaters you can pack into one little cupboard.
He was supposed to be coming a fortnight ago. The builder said he'd phone me. I would have been there to let him in if the builder had phoned me.
It was about three weeks ago that I said it would only take me half an hour to clear the cupboard but I'd do it over the weekend so I wouldn't need to stress about doing it at short notice. When I told him I was a bit bored with being surrounded by the contents of the cupboard for the last fortnight, he said I'd told him I wouldn't do it till the electrician was coming.
That's three times he's forgotten to phone me, or forgotten what we said. I think he needs an admin assistant or a notebook. Forgetting things is not the way to keep customers.
I've arranged to go out next week with someone who has shingles. Must find out if that's wise. Nothing exciting till a couple of concerts in ten days. Suits me, I'm in suspended animation till this work is finished. Ah well, bright side - I have food and a house. |

My MIL has had shingles for the past eight months. Extremely painful. I've been told I'm safe as long as the sores have crusted over, but I don't make contact just in case. She understands, she wouldn't wish anyone to have to go through it.
I'm sorry you've felt no one is responding at times. I'm certainly guilty of not being here on a regular basis so I'm not keeping up at all well.

With regards to the dreaded shingles, as a sufferer of this, my GP told me that it is only infectious to people who haven't had chicken pox and is 'contagious' until the blisters crust over. It is not infectious when the rash has gone and the 'nerve' pain remains. You can only get shingles if you have had chicken pox. It is exceptionally painful and alas, it does recur!
I hope that your friend is okay Lesley!

Thanks, you two. I have a friend who is now 81 and has been feeling "weird" since she had shingles two years ago. Her husband got it first but he seems to be OK now - or perhaps he just hasn't grumbled where I can hear him.
The current one is nearer my age and seems to be coping better, but has been told to stay away from anyone who is having chemo, as it depresses their immune system, or is pregnant. I had chickenpox when I was little, but my immune system isn't great, as I haven't got a spleen. Will research.
Wyambezi, I hope your MIL will see it off thoroughly, and soon!
I didn't know when the electrician was coming, so I was up at eight. Ouch. At quarter past nine, he phoned to say he'd had a call from an old people's care home, that they had no heating. I said their need is greater, and he said "I hoped you'd say that." How could I say anything else?
He rang again at eleven - their fusebox was burnt out, and he was off to replace it.
It'll take him a few hours, and he says he'll need at least half a day for me, so he's coming on Tuesday instead. About half past eight. Ouch. |

This electrician is becoming a real 'pain', Lesley! I think I'd have gotten a new one...:)
My Dad had Shingles years ago, but I believe he saw the end of it. I've had Chicken Pox, so I wonder. There are tons of ads right now, about the horrors of the disease.(?) The older you get, the more likely you are to get it...Good, something to look forward to. :)

True, but I couldn't really argue. I imagine he has some sort of arrangement with the care home - they didn't just pick him out of the phone book - and I would also imagine that electricians will have extra work at this time of year, so I'm not that bothered about waiting another few days.
The windows - and the workers who will install them - will follow a week later, so I've only got another couple of weeks of sitting in the corner hugging my knees and rocking gently.
The risk increases with age? Oh great. :( |

There's a shingles vaccine for age 60+. It's supposed to decrease the likelihood of contracting shingles by 50% and lessen pain if you get it.

Thanks, W, I'm definitely going to ask about that. Meanwhile, I think I'm going to play cowardly. I mean safe.
Definitely not, Gary. I think we have enough to keep us occupied! |

Just for a change, I'm in the middle of a perfectly pathetic exchange of emails with a well-established department store chain.
I was browsing their website when I stumbled upon a load of nightdresses. A few of them were labelled cotton jersey, or polyester-cotton, but most of them didn't show what they were made of, or if they were jersey or woven. Obviously I'm delighted to know that they're comfortable! and easy-care! but would like to know more.
So, on Thursday 22/11, I sent an email asking about construction and content, and got a stock acknowledgement.
"Dear Mrs ... We aim to respond to your query within the next 48 hours. In order to help us ensure you receive a response as quickly as possible, we would ask that you limit yourself to one email on your issue."
On Monday 26/11, they emailed again.
"Dear Lesley,
... "I have made a note of your query and will contact a member of our Buying Team once they have returned to the office."
Dear Lesley? Your name isn't familiar, but your manner is! Not impressed. Four days to tell me nothing? OK it's two "working" days but it's four shopping days.
This came this morning - 1/12 - nine days after my first approach.
"Dear Lesley,
"Thank you for your email received 26 November 2012.
"In order to locate this information for you, I would need to speak to our Buyers. Unfortunately, they are only available weekdays between 9am and 5pm. I will arrange for someone to contact our Buying Team who will be in touch with a response to your query."
It's OK, I gave up a week ago. But you do wonder how these companies manage to stay in business.

The electrician said he would be here at about 8.30. So I was up at eight (!) and sat like a lemon while 8.30 came and went, 9am came and went...
At 9.20 a van appeared and a strange young man stepped out of it. "I'm the electrician." "No, I'm not him. I work for him." All of which I'd guessed...
He was told not to come before nine because there wouldn't be anyone to let him in - a polite way of saying I wouldn't be up yet. But I was up, and don't you just love the way these men talk amongst themselves but don't bother telling the customer?
Still, he was quiet, polite, house-trained, communicative and efficient: preferable to his boss in every way. He can come again.
Windows on Monday. |
