I'd always thought that once you got a blog you had a blog in perpetuity, and could continue to add to it, whether you were a paying member or not. That may have been right at one time, but it isn't now.

I wrote an update yesterday, a few hours after I'd had an email to tell me that my paying membership had expired, and got an "access denied" message. I thought it was a shame to waste it. Off I go...

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

baldricksmum, I'm glad you enjoyed it, even though you weren't meant to! :) I think my dislike for Andrea Bocelli springs from his massive ego. His singing's OK but his ego is disproportionately large... IMVHO. In the same way, I can't watch anything with Mel Gibson in it now, because the knowledge that he is a complete idiot will overshadow anything that's happening in the film.

Lovely clip, Sizz, thank you. Good, fun group. Accessible lyrics, too!

I get a bit of that with Tom Cruise; it takes a while to get into his character because I'm too busy hating him and thinking what an... idiot he is! :P

I'm glad I'm not alone, Richard!

This may be regarded as blasphemy, but I won't watch anything with Vanessa Redgrave in it now. I have watched her in the dim distant past and felt sick at her facial contortions. It is possible to convey emotion without looking as though you're trying to get a wasp out of your gums without using your hands. And then her loopy political views clinched it - she now makes me feel queasy physically and mentally!

I now keep quiet when people say she's a wonderful actress, just like I keep quiet when people say Mozart's music is sublime.

Years ago, at a youth concert which included some Mozart, I told one of the parents that Mozart's music was derivative and repetitive. He looked shocked for a moment, and then regained his composure.
"Ah yes," he said, "but that's the genius of Mozart: that he could make every note sound different."

I'm always impressed by people who can think on their feet.

Hmmmmm, no detesting here either Mum, maybe just a smattering of jealousy. Baldrick's a lucky guy.

Wow, it's jumpin' in here :) Going back a few posts, I have to mention this Lesley.

Andre Agassi's autobiography "Open" was a fantastic read, I loved it. His musical taste is quite amusing though, the funniest being what he listened to during workouts. Not Metallica, classic rock or hip-hop, but... Celine Dion! I guess she's part of what made him such an outstanding athlete!

Lochalsh I suppose Agassi has somewhat of a penchant for tall brunettes, witness his earlier marriage to Brooke Shields. Brooke has a brain; I really don't know whether Celine does.

Celine's male counterpart for me is Josh Groban. *Shudder*

Lesley, what about Joshua Bell, who's somewhat like Bocelli in his crossover attempts? I almost know what you'll say, but I'll ask anyway!

I'll reserve comment on Vanessa Redgrave. Her politics aren't to my liking, but her acting certainly is. By the way, my daughter talked with her at a party, said she wanted to say "my mother has admired you for years," but was afraid it would come over as an ageist comment. I have a nice kid.

Hope you're well, Lesley. ((((((((Belle of Bedford)))))))

Goodness - Agassi voluntarily listening to Celine Dion? Gosh!

Perhaps this would have been a better choice than the previous clip - an even schmaltzier schmaltzfest, if that were possible:

Interesting question about Joshua Bell. I didn't have a clue what I was going to say, but here goes! I like his playing and his personality; I do like him when he's playing this sort of thing:

Kreisler - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jk16b9pvXY&
or
Debussy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4XgxduIv_0&
or
Bach - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJahQRJ0Tq8

but not when he's playing Gershwin as mangled by Heifetz. How close is that to what you were expecting?

Yes, very nicely done, your daughter. Proud mummy! Nice. :)

I am well, thank you. Today I emptied the dishwasher, filled it, and put the rubbish and recycling out. There - three jobs in one day. Two months ago, feeble as it sounds, they would have been spread over three days.

Lochalsh I'm very particular about how my Gershwin is played, and I like neither Bell's nor Heifetz's take on his music. Joshua's fine in general, though, as in Jascha. (Who names these guys?)

I no longer have a dishwasher to load and unload, but I'm surviving without one now that my entertaining patterns have changed. I do create rubbish and had to put the containers on the curb today, same as you. *Intoning "Hands Across the Water"*

Yes, I have a lovely daughter, though she's not a kid any longer, now that she's in her mid-thirties. Now, how did that happen?

Glad to hear you have some energy. Things will keep improving, I think.

Lochalsh I rush to add that I put the recycling out today, as well. I grace the earth with more than my fair and comely countenance, you know.

I'll just add that my whole early childhood was returned to me seeing all the original folk videos of the early 60s mainly in black and white on Youtube after not seeing most since they were first shown. The White Heather Club provided many more as I watched it every week, and made me realise how lucky I was to actually know The Spinners through work soon after and have them play for us when they came to visit. They looked tall on TV and were very tall standing next to me a foot lower as well.

I like my Gershwin too. It's good as it is. It doesn't need messing with.

Ooh yes - Andy Stewart, Moira Anderson. I remember a review when she joined the programme - amazing what silly things stick in your mind - which said that Moira Anderson was one of the few singers around who didn't look as though her hair had been cut with a knife and fork. Great praise indeed... for a singer? It's also amazing what we watched, and what we read too. Nothing new about cheap journalism, but funny that nobody ever commented on Andy Stewart's alarming quiff.

This morning I got a phone call from Papworth Hospital, the specialist hospital which will repeat the repair op they did 13 years ago. They've offered me the first available date: 15th July.

I shall need to go there two weeks beforehand, for a pre-admission clinic. That's at 10am, because the woman who rang took pity on me when she said 9.30. I've asked for patient transport, because it's too far for me to drive at the moment, even if I knew the way and didn't risk getting lost and it wasn't crack of dawn. I need to be ready two hours before the appointment time. Me, ready to go at 8am - should be fun.

s-m-w How good of you to let us know about your hospital appointment am sure it will allow those who wish, to either send cards or visit ... get well soon.

Lochalsh Lesley, how lovely that you'll get to celebrate Bastille Day before your operation. Go easy on the vin rouge and vin blanc, though, okay? Save a' that until afterward!

Lochalsh Here's my favorite Gershwin piece, bar none, and my favorite arrangement of it:

Lesley, to answer your earlier question, you were far easier on Joshua Bell than I thought you might have been. I'd gotten the impression before that you weren't crazy about musicians who straddled genres. JB does straddle, but he does it well: he's gracefully versatile, I think.

Good news it's sooner rather than later- and you'll soon have enough material for the book. I'll be thinking of you.

Oh dear - nice idea, but I need to be at the hospital by 3pm on Bastille Day, so the wine lake will still be overflowing. Perhaps afterwards I can celebrate with a very small single malt?

I don't remember discussing musicians who mixed or crossed genres. Bang goes my Miss Marple title! I'm not bothered about genres as long as it's done properly, but I do think opera singers singing pop sounds a bit odd. And yes, Joshua Bell is as versatile as George Gershwin was.

It's a pretty song but wasn't it OK as it was? what made Percy Grainger think it need to be arranged?

David, I shall take in a notebook with me. I was thinking of writing a book about the family medical history, and submitting it under comedy.

My brother's first daughter seems to have been adequately chemotherapied and radiotherapied, and he says she's on the mend.

It's his second daughter's turn now. She decided that she was fed up with being big, and asked for gastric surgery. She's enviably tall, and perfectly proportioned, not fat, so goodness knows how many hoops she had to jump through to get agreement to the surgery. She had to go back into hospital because she had an ulcer near the site of the surgery. She had an endoscopy. The risks were explained. It's usually perfectly safe but in one in 5000 cases the endoscopy camera can nick your insides. I don't think I need to finish this paragraph, do I?
