Topic: Bus Ride Renewal Challenge

Subject: Bus Ride Renewal Challenge
Date: Mar 16 10

While the replacement of low-ranked quizzes is a continuing goal, preparation of extra quizzes to introduce variety for the tourists is also important now that the Bus Ride is well-established. Some tourists are on their third tour, and even nice quizzes get repetitive. The lowest-ranked quiz at the moment (in the cycle), aside from a few that have already had a volunteer for a new quiz, is Dominica, around 31,000, which is roughly in the top third of all quizzes.

The following list shows the quizzes in the current rotation in need of an additional quiz:

Angola, Belize, Burundi, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Comoros, Dominican Republic, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Fiji, Gabon, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Honduras, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgystan, Latvia, Lesotho, Liberia, Marshall Islands, Moldova, Mozambique, Nauru, North Korea, Palau, Republic of Congo, Saint Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Swaziland, Syria, The Bahamas, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Zambia

If you create a new quiz on one of the preceding countries, get it placed online, and have it place within a reasonable ranking, it will be removed from the listing for this project and placed into the cycle for future rides.

As an added bonus, we have modified the ratings system to give all quizzes in our rotation a ratings bump.

Feel free to use this thread to also "claim" a country so that you don't duplicate someone else's effort and make sure to follow along with our later posts and updates to make sure that everything is in order. We look forward to seeing what you can come up with!

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

I have submitted a quiz for Chile. My next step is going to be exploring currently available quizzes to see if there are any that look better that the ones currently on the itinerary, starting from the top of the list. Suggestions may appear if I find any!

Here is a much more highly ranked quiz, that would make a better stop for the Bus than the current one. It's still a bit short on II, but fairly interesting.

I thought the Denmark quiz was uninteresting as it consisted mainly of 'which direction is A from B' type of questions.

I didn't enjoy it, but hadn't anticipated such a dramatic plummet! I probably won't have time to tackle another country until next weekend, at which time I will check to see if any more have gone offline, and start writing from the top of the list down if not. At the moment, that would be Denmark unless someone else volunteers in the meantime. i have checked out the available replacements online, and they aren't much better than the existing quiz.

I'll see what I can do with Denmark. I've been busy this week but next week looks better. Commission XI is still refusing to play nicely, so this might be a good distraction. I'll try and jot down some ideas for questions to see if it's feasible for me. Will confirm within 24 hours.

I have nine questions written for San Marino now and have finally worked out in my head how to write the last one. Just need to add interesting info and I'll be done. Hopefully, I should have that all done by this time next week.

I spent the evening playing quizzes related to the lowest-ranked quizzes, starting from the top as of this week. Not much fun, I've got to say! The following quizzes do not have any online quizzes that look to me like reasonable replacements for the current quiz, for one or more of the following reasons:
1 they are old and show signs of dated information
2 they have very little information
3 they focus on obscure bits of information that few would be likely to know or be able to look up easily
4 they only deal with a very small part of the country (there is a nice Chile quiz that is only about Easter Island, for example, which I decided against).

These countries need to have a quiz written: Colombia, Denmark, Malawi, Netherlands (2 volunteers), Suriname, Costa Rica, Thailand.

I wrote and submitted a quiz on Chile.

These countries have suitable quizzes available, which have had links posted here since the last time Terry cleared them out: Kuwait, Qatar, Myanmar, Jamaica, New Zealand.

I haven't checked any countries above New Zealand (which has a couple of nice quizzes), as I got disheartened by the steady diet of not-for-the-tourists quiztaking. Two countries ranked above that at the moment (Guatemala and Ukraine) have had quizzes promised. This leaves 63 more countries with red tags to consider. Some of those I will never reach - a quiz ranked 5000 will do, even if it is 8 years old! In fact, I am not sure that I thought some of those red-flagged ones were a problem when I took them this time around. I will leave others to feel the inspiration for replacement quizzes that would be nice, but which are not urgent. Time to head off to a working week and leave the bus to lurch along on the final stages of its first tour.

Let me give Malawi a crack, eh? If there are no objections.

LOL. Quite unexpectedly, this quiz allows me to make use of my...unique expertise.

I've done a bit of research on Denmark, and I will take it on, so there's another off your 'to do' list L-T.

I've called exterminators for weeks now regarding that fairy problem...

San Marino is in the queue. Hopefully it's up to snuff.

Looking at Terry's list above, I notice that Brazil is (marginally) in the red. If it is felt that it is needed, I have a Brazil quiz that could replace it. It's not my best effort (I wrote it in my early days) but it has a decent ranking.

Hurrah! It looks as if the second cycle will be able to start with all 195 countries online, even if some quizzes aren't crash hot. That is, assuming none of the ones yet to be visited gets hauled unceremoniously offline, in which case soime emergency writing may be necessary. I am pretty confident that I can produce a quiz on any country that will be usable if not brilliant in a day (as long as it is a weekend day), and have my tools at the ready in case it looks necessary. So far so good.

I have been fascinated to gather snippets of information such as the national motto of Chile, the latest quiz I worte: "By reason or by force" pretty well says it all! If I weren't writing quizzes about unfamiliar places, I would never run across these gems.

Here's San Marino. History is processing things a lot faster than General Knowledge!

I know what you mean about the snippets Looney - the words to the various National Anthems are often well worth a look (translated into English of course) - some of them are pretty, well, bloodthirsty!
