Topic: Bus Ride Renewal Challenge

Subject: Bus Ride Renewal Challenge
Date: Mar 16 10

While the replacement of low-ranked quizzes is a continuing goal, preparation of extra quizzes to introduce variety for the tourists is also important now that the Bus Ride is well-established. Some tourists are on their third tour, and even nice quizzes get repetitive. The lowest-ranked quiz at the moment (in the cycle), aside from a few that have already had a volunteer for a new quiz, is Dominica, around 31,000, which is roughly in the top third of all quizzes.

The following list shows the quizzes in the current rotation in need of an additional quiz:

Angola, Belize, Burundi, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Comoros, Dominican Republic, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Fiji, Gabon, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Honduras, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgystan, Latvia, Lesotho, Liberia, Marshall Islands, Moldova, Mozambique, Nauru, North Korea, Palau, Republic of Congo, Saint Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Swaziland, Syria, The Bahamas, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Zambia

If you create a new quiz on one of the preceding countries, get it placed online, and have it place within a reasonable ranking, it will be removed from the listing for this project and placed into the cycle for future rides.

As an added bonus, we have modified the ratings system to give all quizzes in our rotation a ratings bump.

Feel free to use this thread to also "claim" a country so that you don't duplicate someone else's effort and make sure to follow along with our later posts and updates to make sure that everything is in order. We look forward to seeing what you can come up with!

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Chad is submitted :) Even if it doesn't meet requirements, I learned a few things.

RE: "Even if it doesn't meet requirements, I learned a few things."

That is exactly why I got hooked on the Bus Ride quizzes. At the start, there were some very old and patchy quizzes that didn't really tell players much of anything, and I had discovered in writing my first few how much of interest there is to find out about places you've never heard of! In fact, I think it is easier to write a good Bus Ride quiz if you don't know much, since you won't assume everyone knows something if you just discovered it yourself. And you find out some fascinating stuff :)

Oh yes, the research is absolutely the best part. I have wanted to visit places I'd never been aware of before. I want to visit Ouidah in Benin, Uganda, and the Seychelles.

Eh, I found a duplicate in the existing Chad quiz with mine. Well, not exactly duplicate, but very similar, it's about official languages. Not sure if I should take it off the (already long) queue and change it, thoughts?

A single similar question is usually not an issue - we have lots of them. If the Geography editor thinks there is an issue, they will let you know when they look at it.

It turned out not to be a problem. Chad has arrived... (or would it be better to say, we've arrived at Chad?)

I'm half done Morocco, but with Photo Quizzes 'offline' for the weekend, it's not really going anywhere for at least a few days.

Ok I haven't checked in this thread in awhile and am now confused.. Now that each country has a fairly well ranked quiz, we're trying to get several quizzes per country? Or will still only the best-ranked quiz per country be played on the Bus Ride?

I guess my question is actually - why do the countries listed at the top need an additional quiz, but not other countries?

I am trying to get a list of two quizzes for each country, so that it will be possible to keep introducing variety into the Bus Ride experience. Some countries have many quizzes from which to choose, some have at least two that would be usable (which I defined for myself as being on suitable material of interest to an international audience, and having a ranking at least as high as 50,000). The list at the top of the thread is countries which only have one suitable quiz. Now that every country has a quiz in the top 35,000 or better, the time has come to look for variety when tourists are on their third (or more) cycle. This doesn't mean that I am not still keeping my eye out for good quizzes that would be even better than what is already available, just that I am more interested in getting all countries up to speed with two possible quizzes. There is no point alternating quizzes between the current very good ones and the old ones with rankings in the 90,000 range, and the jaded tourists do need to get periodic variation in their diet. :)

And when the target of two per country is reached, I will decide whether or not it seems appropriate to encourage any specific goal for aspiring authors. That's a pretty long way off, I expect. Meanwhile, any new quiz that turns out to be better than what is already there will be placed on the list of suggestions for the next time Terry is ready to do a swap.
