Subject: Children's songs

As I write this, I'm listening to Stuart McLean on CBC's 'Vinyl Cafe', and he's playing songs that were written/performed for children or songs that children have liked over the years - so far he's played 'The Ballad of Davy Crockett', 'Supercalifragelistic', 'Baby Beluga', various counting songs and so on.

What was your favourite song when you were a kid? I liked 'Green Grow the Rushes O' (drove my father nuts singing that one in my less than mellifluous voice all the way from Birmingham to Hereford when I was about eight),'Barbara Allen', and 'Mairzy Doats'.

How about you?

Kermit the Frog's nephew, Robin, singing 'Halfway Down The Stairs'. I used to love it and drive my folks insane singing it at the top of my voice!

When my grandson was in pre-school he learned Little Bunny Foo Foo. It was cute but a little violent for pre-schoolers.

lesley153 The Ballad of Davy Crockett was a favourite. I remember everyone at school singing it.

It amused my aunt to hear me sing the theme to the TV programme The Adventures of Robin Hood. That's the ancient, cheesy version with Richard Greene at his cheesy best.

All together now: Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen...

Honeybee, I remember that one... :-)

I like the one that goes "my hand on my stomach, what have we hear, that is my bread basket my momma dear"

and "And the green grass grew all around all around and the green grass grew all around. There was a hole, there was a hole, in the middle of the ground, in the middle of the ground, and in that hole and in that hole, there was a tree there was a tree".

Lesley, all I can think of when I hear the old Robin Hood (starring Richard Greene) theme is"
"Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore
Dumpty-dumpty-dum
He robs from the poor and gives to the rich...
Silly B*tch!"

lesley153 Wonderful Dennis Moore - thank you - I must have blinked and missed that one. :)

I don´t know if I can contribute here as I have never been an English-speaking child and so I didn´t learn any English childen´s songs at the proper age. I am learning them now, though and this one I like most of all, however, I am not sure if this is a song:

Jolana, how about Czech songs that you liked ? You could give us the English translations since few if any of us speak Czech.

Lesley,I remember the Richard Greene 'original' Robin Hood with great affection. Does that make me ancient? And cheesy? :)

No,no......Please don't answer that!

I'll have to go for 'Three Wheels On My Wagon' by The New Christy Minstrals. Still makes me smile now.

"Duh, Paw? Are you sure this is the right road?
Will you hush up? You and your maps!"

Cymru, this is a Czech song that I liked. It´s quite a smart but untranslatable song about a ladybug.

I went around singing "Davy Crockett" for months and wore my coonskin cap as I did it!

Thanks to my mother's influence, I learned "Greensleeves" and "Charlie is My Darling" early on.
