Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve.... You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

An English teacher once told me that, "learning keeps you forever young", and it's so true! That's my favourite saying here, I posted it in my comments.

Thanks to Fun Trivia, I'm learning more everyday! And it's therapeutic they say, for older people (such as myself), to keep your brain active.

I'd have to say the one that is on my profile.
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Mahatma Gandhi

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- WOW-- What a Ride!"

insanity22186 She wasn't famous to anybody outside our immediate family, but when I was very young my mother told me that if I read a lot that I could travel over the world without ever leaving this little rural area where I grew up. She was right. When I grew older I did get a chance to travel over much of the world and I didn't find any place that was totally unfamiliar because I had already read about most of the places I visited and lived.

4 things you can't recover...the stone after it's thrown...the word after it's said...the occasion after it's missed...the time after it's gone.

One of my favorites is: "Speak up to be heard; hush up to be appreciated" - author unknown

(original quote uses shut instead of hush, but post wouldn't be accepted this way)

We should start a little FT book of wisdom I think. These are all great.

Except for my two. I use the expression "In a pig's eye" a lot. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever, but it keeps popping out whenever I'm asked a silly question.

And this one made me laugh the first time I saw it so I've always remembered it: "A camel is a horse designed by a committee"

Creedy, I like the camel quote. I hadn't heard or seen that one before!

lesley153 I've heard the camel quote, and I've used it because it's wonderful. Not recently, though - thank you for reminding me!

I think it's a pearl of wisdom from Sir Alec Issigonis - the genius/designer of the Mini. Not sure, though.

lesley153 I'd rather call it a pearl of wisdom, than a moth-eaten cliché, which is what one Mairi Macdonald called it.

It's also referred to as an ancient proverb. It's not that ancient!

" “A camel is a horse designed/planned by a committee” is a phrase of unknown authorship that became popular by 1956. "
