Anyway, while we are waiting for Dippo to pop back in, I will continue.
Our laws on guns suit me just fine, sure we have more gun crime now than there used to be, especially in the large cities with the drug pushers, but they mostly kill each other so far.
We have specially trained armed police to deal with firearm incidents.
If we armed our police and relaxed our gun laws for ordinary people, more criminals will arm themselves and the situation will only escalate and more people will die than would otherwise.
In America, I think that it would be very hard to revise your gun laws, even if you wanted to.

Oh whew! I think Simon out-posted me! So before I go further, I simply must comment on Simon's helpful hints and advice for the unsavvy, yet savory, foreign traveler:
I received such terrible information! I was told that if I walked into any British pub, and especially in Scotland, that I should loudly announce as I walk through the door, "Hey, Hi, Ho Jimmy! Ah've nae knickers and mah (something I can't quite remember without looking at my glossary) is cauld as it's (another word that escapes me at the moment, but has a lot of EKKs in it) BALTIC!" The emphasis was to be on BALTIC and that odd EKK word, and allegedly, every man in that pub, who apparently all go by the name of Jimmy, would immediately buy me a drink.
Also, is there a dress code? I was told to wear a kilt, tights, little lace-up boots, and a jaunty beret.
Maybe this is just a regional thing? Please let me know if I need to update my British/Scottish glossary. I'd hate to make a fool of myself!

Yes Elle, lots of drink, salted peanuts, crisps, chocs etc.
Oh, and dirty looks from every other woman in the pub.

Sian? The English don't have armed cops? Huge mistake. Let's say that I'm an armed criminal and you're a cop. I've got a gun. What do you have? Pepper spray? A taser? A nightstick? LOL Try and stop me. It takes a wolf to catch a wolf.
More criminals having guns has nothing to do with relaxed gun laws. Criminals will get their hands on anything they want despite whatever laws are in place.

Not many of our criminals use guns, Anton Sure some do, but most use knives. Arm our police and more criminals will arm themselves even for petty crime. That means more civilian casualties.

Okay Sian, fishing first.
We also need licenses to fish, and if we go out-of-state to fish, we can buy a one-day or one-week fishing license, and maybe a three-day license, as well. I believe each state is autonomous and sets their own fees and rates for licenses. Children up to a certain age don't need licenses to fish, but I don't know what that age is and this is an adult blog, so I'm not going to worry about that.
There are also "private" lakes and ponds where you pay a fee to the landowner to fish. This personally baffles me, but that's just me. To each his own.
I believe rivers are possibly a state-by-state thing, or maybe even a river-by-river thing. I know there are stretches of some rivers where you are not allowed to fish, at least not from the shore, as it is privately-owned. But no one "owns" a river.
Water rights are also a HUGE big deal here, and I may go into that later. But just as a small example, it is illegal for rain to fall from the sky and then fall anywhere but in the rivers or reservoirs in Colorado. If it lands on your lawn or your roof, it is breaking the law, but can't really be stopped or fined. However! If YOU collect that rainwater to use to water your pansies, you can absolutely be fined for "stealing" water. Water rights. HUGE.
As for tickling trout? I don't know for certain what that means, but if you try to tickle a bull trout or a lake trout here, he will probably tickle you back, possibly taking a few fingers with him. I'd really be careful of Northern Pike, too.

Im not talking about the big organised criminals here. they do use guns but are usually more restrained, try to use them for intimidation more than for killing..
Im talking about all the young hotheads, petty criminals, thieves etc. if they arm themselves because the police or their potential victims are armed, there will be casualties.

Really Anton ?.
I think it takes a brave policeman to face an armed man with nothing but his baton.
By doing so, he makes this country safer for the rest of us unarmed citizens.

If their potential victims are armed with guns, then those hotheads you speak of will think twice about who they try to rob. Fact.
If those cops are armed, then they have the means to stop those hotheads you speak of. What can they do now to make them think twice? What is in place to make those hotheads nervous about doing their criminal activities? Nothing.

Anton, think about what you're saying. the attitude.
give a man a gun, he's a wolf.
man without a gun. he's a lamb.

A lamb can't defend itself against a wolf.
A man without a gun can't defend himself against a man with a gun.
perhaps you need to think about this.

Doesnt usually happen that way. not here.
what you are describing would be a very, very rare occurance.
Sometimes it can happen of course, we have our share of nutters as you have. But its so rare that makes no difference.

If their potential victims are armed, they will think twice about robbing them Fact.
Does that stop them robbing people in America, who are armed?
Here, it is believed that if the potential victim is armed, the run-of-mill petty thief (majority of criminals in Britain) will arm himself, resulting in casualties that wouldnt happen otherwise.
Beter to lose your petty cash than your life.

Yes! Person A is not armed and person B is armed. Who would you rob? You see, where I live, it is illegal to conceal your gun.

Tickling trout, Elle. They hide between stones in the river. Gently put your hand in, try not to scare the fish. Stroke its belly gently, gently with your fingers. I think it sorts of mesmerizes the fish. You can then grab them.
Quite illegal of course. not sporting at all.
