Okay, wait! Hold on a sec! REEEEECH!
Sian? I thought you wanted to know about some of our, i.e, the US laws and customs, emphasis on customs? I also thought you were interested in a woman's viewpoint?
I just answered your fishing post.
I will contribute more about hunting in the US, if you're truly interested. Otherwise, I'll just sit back and watch.
I do know about your hunting and gun laws, and how controversial this has been. Information -- it's power.
Two things, though. Not only can we change our gun laws, we change them constantly. In fact, today is Election Day in the US, and this is a big election. With the timezones, the polls closed two hours ago in the Eastern timezone, and 5 minutes ago in my Mountain timezone. And yes, I absolutely voted!
And you are wrong about concealed carry in the US. In Colorado, IF I take the required course, and IF I pay the required fee, which is quite steep, and IF I pass the required personal checks regarding my character, and IF I then follow the concealed carry permit laws, I can carry my potato peeler strapped to my thigh or under my jacket. It does, however, have to be registered, and registered to me, which is also a very long and involved process.
There are some places where I could not take my potato peeler, concealed or otherwise, and not only am I aware of those places, I am perfectly fine with that.
Let me know if you're still interested in my own, personal female viewpoint. We live in different countries. Of course our laws are going to be different. So are our customs.
I'm much more interested in being a savvy traveler, though, and now I'm worried about that kilt and jaunty beret! And why is everyone named Jimmy, including the bartender? And is he called a bartender? These things interest me much more!

Sorry Elle. I do want to know about your hunting laws, how it can work with conservation. what you can kill. even try to understand the obsession with it. is it just for food ?.
What about the wonderful diversity of animals you have. wolves, mountain lions, beavers, bears etc. Oh dear, is it a stupid question. Are they safe.

More on the crazy "The water is deemed by law to fall from the sky and into the rivers and reservoirs in the State of Colorado" in a bit.
Colorado is also a single-use water state, so it is also against the law for me to steam my broccoli using water from my tap, let that water cool, and then use it to water my petunias, inside or outside of my home. I am required, by law, to pour that water down the drain.
Anton, California absolutely has concealed carry laws and permits. I know because I was accidentally sent a CA badge (yes, you also get a badge! And you had best know how to use it!) rather than a CO badge, and had to send it back!
Tickling trout! I do that with my honey bees, but only when I know they are very, very happy and slightly intoxicated in my Butterfly Garden, and hanging out with me in the Butterfly Bush. Butterflies will also land on my fingers, and there is one adorable little hummingbird who (yes, who) landed on my finger once, and on the bridge of my sunglasses more than once, to take a closer look. He is very brave and very curious!
Tickling trout is probably fine, as long as you don't remove them from the river, yes? Or at least put them back!

Jimmy?, Well I believe they might be called Jimmy in Scotland or even in England. Here in Wales, they are either Dai or Butt.

Not only Jimmy, but it is allegedly important to say, in this order, immediately upon entering any pub, "Hey! Hi! Ho Jimmy!"
I don't imagine this is a law, but more of a custom?

From films, that's what most of us in Britain know about America. I know its all exaggerated, that's why its nice to know how it really is.

Practically, everything is legal with a permit. But, you don't need a concealed weapon to legally carry a gun.

Sian, CO is the official abbreviation for Colorado, and CA is the official abbreviation for California. One little vowel, and it all goes awry!
Anton, "concealed" is the tricky part, and the part that can really get you into trouble. It's not for everyone, and it is surely not to be taken lightly, and I surely do not.
This is RJ's blog. Let's keep it conversational!

Sian! For goodness sake! Films/movies are for entertainment, and not to be taken seriously, or at least, not to be used as any sort of reference material!
I watched "Trainspotting" and liked it quite a bit, but I certainly didn't generalize and assume it reflected on an entire country.
I've watched the last two James Bond movies, but only because Daniel Craig starred in them, and I would watch him reading the phone book. But I can't say I learned anything from them, at least nothing "real."
"Sense and Sensibility," the BBC version, and "A Room With A View" are two of my favorite movies, but I watch movies for their entertainment value, not as a reliable reference.
Do you read books, Sian? I know some people don't, and that's why I ask.

Sian? Can you tell me which movies about hunting you watched that made you believe Americans are "obsessed?" Or even movies that involved hunting? I'm wracking my brain, and only coming up with two where hunting is even a semi-topic. And I love movies! Toss out a few of those movies, and let me see if I can figure out where "obsessed" came from, if you would be so kind?

Oh I know that. films are just films. grossly exaggerated. But you read some peoples profiles on here and you begin to wonder. Thats why I wanted to ask someone, a real person who lives there some questions.
