It's interesting how certain foods and products are unique to this area.

For example, folks in Lebanon County take it for granted that those outside know what Shuey's Pretzels are or what Lebanon Balogna is (and it would seem the same applies to mulching techniques).

Quite so, Jazz. I know about pretzels, especially Pennsylvania pretzels, but mushroom manure...don't I feel like a mushroom.

OK, now I AM an authority on manure whether its horse, cow or guano. I read up on this mushroom manure, not wanting to appear more ignorant, but to my dismay it contains no mushrooms. It doesn't look like a mushroom or anything. So why do they call it mushroom manure? They use it to grow mushrooms....yikes I thought mushrooms would grow all by their little selves. Nope, they thrive in mushroom manure but only for 18 to 20 days then the mushroom manure must be removed. Well, there you have it...the poop scoop ;-)

After a rain there are many mushrooms come up and they are usually is dried up cow plop.

That didn't make sense. In my pasture, after a rain, the mushrooms come up in dried up cow plop. We have people actually stop and ask if it would be OK for them to pick them.

What didn't make sense Honeybee? What I wrote or what was in the article link by Jazz? Mushroom manure doesn't have cow manure in it either. I would sure like to clear this up for you if possible ;-)

No, sorry Morpheus, I just rephrased what I had said.

Every now and then, we can't understand ourselves-so how can anyone else?

It's one of those "stupid human errors" or "stupid human tricks".

Reminds me of the day that I was in physical therapy, and my mom, making fun of my therapist, said to me, "It's as if you're speaking Chinese." I misunderstood-I was tired and not tinking clearly-and I flipped out on her. ["Human error" alert!]

Then again, more often than not there's a communication breakdown :(

Uh-ohhhhhh... Honeybee, those mushrooms in your cowpies? Those would be Magic Mushrooms, and there is a reason people stop to ask if they can pick them. I'm sure they grow other places, but I do believe they are "naturally occurring" in cowpies, in nice, warm pastures.

Magic Mushrooms = Psilocybin mushrooms. Little hallucinogenic darlings.

I honestly have no clue if they are legal -- probably not. I'm not even going to look this one up! I'm just saying, what you've got in your little pasture is something a lot of people probably would pay for. DON'T sell them! That can't be legal. And I'm not sure I'd let anyone out there to muck around with my cows and pick mushrooms, either.

Tell them to stick with the puffballs and morels.

Oh my, the things we learn in trivia!

No, the ones they want are a type of buttob mushroom but they get much bigger than the ones you buy in the market. There probably are some of those3 magic ones out there too, but I don't know how to identify them, so, could be.

Button mushroom, sorry.

Forgive me if I sound really ignorant, but to me a mushroom is a mushroom. How do you tell the difference?

My horse paddock used to grow 'magic mushrooms', they are quite narrow and pointy and dark brown in colour. I suppose horse manure must have the same properties as cow manure.

Jazz, don't eat fungi, there are too many other things that taste better and won't kill you.

Hiya Jane,

Well, in the sense that they are both biomass waste, yes they are the same. But when you start talking chemical content, that's where your generalization hits the fan..so to speak ;-)

I love mushrooms, but I only eat the ones I buy in the shop. I did have a 'fairy ring' in my garden a few weeks ago but I didn't risk eating them.

I have garden but I've never grown mushrooms. They are alright on a big steak but I don't really like them.
