Best wishes for the surgery, MommaKat. I hope you're soon feeling lots better.
My suggestion is Erskine Childers.

Hi!
Got through quicker than expected, thanks for the kind comments but as I said it was minor and only finished up with 6 stitches this time round .. Not enough to boast about. LOL
None of the guesses so far have hit the spot so will throw this clue in which should give it to you. He was the recipient of a Nobel Prize for Literature.

Is your subject male or female of the human kind or some other form of life?

Subject was male(deceased), lived to a ripe old age of 90.
American male, had many careers in television. It's after he got fired from a longtime position that he started doing these commericials. It's a product that everyone has a need for at some point in their life.

No paper products involved here. These commercials purported themselves to be real news stories but in effect they were mini infomercials long before that term ever existed. I have the same last name as a famous outsider.

Nope, sorry. I was being very cryptic with my last clue tying two references into one.
I started out as a newscaster & was also a game show panelist. The commercial I'm talking about used a rhyming catchphrase that is still used to today to talk about toughness & durability.
