I was born a decade earlier and took my own life in the 1970s.
I am somewhat better known.

Anyone want to resurrect this?

I'm game--everybody probably just got too busy. Why don't you start again with a new selection, and maybe everyone will decide to join in?

"Yes Sir!", the great call by Verne Lundquist when Nicklaus birdied #16 in 1986 to win his final green jacket.
I still get goose bumps and remember it like it was yesterday.
I am a horse from way back in the day, who had a famous rider.

Not sure what "way back" means, but I'm going to guess that the jockey was Eddie Acaro and the horse was Whirlaway.

Good guesses, Jaker, but you have to gp back to the 19th century for this one

The Duke of Wellington's horse, Copenhagen?

You picked the right conflict, The Duke's warhorse, Copenhagen, is CORRECT.
Aside: I'm currently putting together a quiz called "Famous Horses and Their Famous Riders"-Copenhagen was the first (and so far, only one ) I've done.
I learned some cool stuff: He died at age 28 (!) and had a funeral with full military honors.
Copenhagen's bloodline goes back to "John Bull", who won the Epsom Derby back in 1792. Who knew?
WELL DONE.
Take it away...

Interesting--there was also a 19th century mare who was a harness racing champion and won her last race at the age of 20, against horses less than half her age. She lived to 28, too. Named Goldsmith something-or-other.
I have to leave for a choral rehearsal--will have a place/person/object, etc. when I get back.

I'm a yearly event that lasts over a number of days. I am one of the oldest of my kind of event and, arguably, the largest. The part of the world where I occur is particularly noted for my event.
