Sorry, I've just got up - will try and answer some of your queries.
Nobody is correct yet.
The character is one whom we grow to sympathise with. It's an adult male. Now I have to flick back and see what you all said again. See next post

The book was written before the 1950s.
I think its one of the greatest American novels written because of the pwer the writer has to evoke images and feelings in the reader.
Originally it was a third longer, but the publisher asked the author to cut back on it, so the effect is that there's a wonderful intensity about it.

What is basically describes is the loss of the great American Dream - and, even though the main character has achieved his dream with wealth etc, the true dream is represented in one of the other characters.
It's a sad story and doesn't end happily.

Actually, I think I'll give it to you because the character's surname is the same as that in the title. Jay Gatsby.

As I said I was picking it out of the air. Thank you. I didn't expect to be successful so I will have to do a little think. Time please!

Okay, here we go. I am a fictitious character. English male. Time set in the 18th century. Shouldn't present too many problems. :)

Sorry, none of them, and the author would not be alive as we had to study this book in school over 60 years ago.

Was the author Charles Dickens?
And if so, is the character Ebeneezer Scrooge?
