certainly not Max Hastings, who was born a few years after I died.
I died in an air crash whilst serving my adopted country.

Nope, during WW2. I was on special intelligence operations and died in South America.

Is this someone whose name would be known to the general public? In other words, is he famous or fairly obscure?

Well gee... I guess fame is farily subjective.
He's the author of a famous book, which was made into an equally famous film.
Although you could find him within the Literature part of FT, he could also crop up within the Animals section...

He's probably more obscure than he should be considering the life he lived and the achievements he made in his 45 years of life.

Nope - a bit more UK/US than that, although bang on in terms of death means and timeframe.
His most famous book was about man's best friend on a bit of a journey...

This is a wild guess as I really thought he died in the South Pacific - R.L. Stevenson?

Yes Daver - I'm Eric Knight.
Born in Yorkshire, England, I served in the Canadian Army in the First World War and subsequently for the US in the Second World War. I was a Major in the US Army OSS and was killed in C-54 air crash near Paramaribo in Dutch Guiana (now Surinam) en route to the 1943 Casablanca Conference.
I was the co-author of "Why We Fight" series with Frank Capra, but will be best remembered as the author of the popular novel/film "Lassie Come Home".
Interesting guy, I think...
So Daver, who the heck are you?
