I take it you are referring to Aussie Rules? So I'll hazard a guess and say Diepierdomenico and I know that isn't spelt right. LOL

Well except for Sailor, I don't know any so that rules me out. Rugby I detest, it is a game for thugs. But I will put my thinking cap on just in case I come up with a name

More clues:
He's considered the greatest player of all time.
Decent family man with two tragedies surrounding his life.

Another name that comes to mind in sport is Andrew Ettingshausen. But I don't know if he was Union or League

You got it Meg
Greatest footy player of all time. Captained the State of Origin games from 1980-1991 - played 33 international games for Australia - Australian captain from 1984 - 1989.
After he retired from football became a sports newscaster on channel nine. Twice during that time, he suddenly went really vague and had to go off air. It was revealed he had epilepsy for a long time and had hidden it from everyone including his family. Required surgery it became so bad and his memory was deteriorating as a result. He couldn't remember matches, for example.
One of his children was born deaf - and he's devoted endless hours since her birth as vice-patron of a national organisation in that field. On intervews in which the whole family is present, he looks at her sometimes and his eyes fill with tears.
Great family man No hint of scandal.
