no, she didn't die young. She lived to a very mature age and actually did some recording not all that long before her death.
None of the guesses have been correct so far, but some of you are getting very close : )

Vera Lynn - don't know if she has passed away but there was a segment dedicated to her recently on TV and it stated in her 80's she was still singing.
