No, not John Carpenter but the age only a couple years off. This person is not noted for horror movies although some his scores came from what can be considered thrillers.
He's mostly noted for family oriented blockbusters.
He started off scoring several American TV series in the late 70's then did his 1st major motion picture in the mid 80's.

This person is in his 60s. Scored one of the biggest box office hits of the 80s & also the 90s, was nominated for an Oscar for each. The 80's one made a huge star of an actor who was already on a popular sitcom. The other featured an actor who also started out on a TV sitcom & the movie had very little dialogue for most of the film.
