Subject: Which Charities Do You Support?
Date: Sep 01 10

I don't have tons of money to chuck around so I'm pretty selective about the charities I support. They are:
My local food bank (with cash and food);
Mennonite Central Committee, which does amazing work in disaster relief;
Alzheimer's Foundation (in memory of my mother)
The Heart and Lung Foundation (in memory of my husband and my father, both emphysema victims);
Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (the Anglican Church of Canada);
Hospitality House (a refugee ministry sponsored by my parish - it is the second largest refugee staging program in Canada);
A local no-kill animal shelter (my late husband's favourite charity);
Medecins Sans Frontieres.

How about you?

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

SPCA - an animal shelter
SOS Childrens Villages
World Wildlife Fund
TAFTA - an organisation here which looks after old people
And at Christmas I buy, pack and distribute hampers to the elderly and those not as fortunate in my village.

OK, so I supported Greenpeace and now I am getting spammed by their organization at every turn. Sililarly I supported the Sea Shepherd and also am getting spammed. I think these actions will serve to limit my participation, not encourage it.

Children's Make A Wish foundation. Local relays for cancer awareness, local police and firemen, and I crochet blankets before winter for the homeless.
I like the expression, 'You can't change the world, but you can change your little corner of it.'

Rocky Mountain Newfoundland rescue, WOLF sanctuary, and The Wildlife Sanctuary are the primary ones. A few others will get occasional donations when I have a couple extra dollars.

Loveyouraccent Ronald McDonald House NZ, IHC, Forest and Bird, Paralympics, CanTeen and local foodbank. It is so difficult to choose charities and so I picked five major charities where the funds I contribute go directly to the charity works in NZ, and one local (food bank) which I am also confident only aids those in my own area.

I tend to support my own community first. So, on my list are The Christmas Bureau (feeds the less fortunate through the month of December), the Stollery Children's hospital (and its Miracle Wishes), our Zoo (sad as it is), our Animal Shelter and the Food Bank. Many of my "donations" are of my time, rather than money. I'd donate my blood if they would have it, but they won't. If you've never served in a "soup kitchen" before, I highly recommend it. Makes you grateful for MANY things. Also something you should make your children do at least once.

The Canadian Red Cross
The Local Humane Society
The United Way
Local Womens Shelters.
I do agree with supporting charities and organizations that are close to your heart and your home, first and foremost.

I am on such a tight budget that I cannot donate money but I donate my time to 'Can You Identify Me', an organization that works to help identify deceased Jane (and John) Does.
