Topic: Quiz Writing Month 2010

Posted by: CellarDoor

Subject: Quiz Writing Month 2010
Date: Oct 27 10

You may have heard of National Novel-Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), an international project whose participants try to write a novel within the month of November. From just after midnight on November 1 to just before midnight on November 30, tens of thousands of people spend their spare time cranking out 50,000-word books.

I don't know about you, but I don't have the time to write a novel. Instead, building on our success from last year, I'd like to propose a FunTrivia version by declaring November a Quiz-Writing Month (QuiWriMo). The goal is to set each of you fine authors a personal challenge to step up your quiz- and question-writing in the month of November. This might mean finishing off neglected quizzes sitting in your word processor, or going for the Question Quest badges, or making progress on a Challenge or Commission quiz, or writing new works from scratch. Your mission: write more questions than usual in the month of November!

To make the rules a bit more specific:

1. Only questions written in November count. You can do research or outlining in advance, but not the writing! (For example, say you have four questions written on a fifteen-question quiz, and you finish it up in November. That counts for eleven questions -- the ones written during QuiWriMo.) The challenge runs from 12:01 a.m. November 1 to 11:59 p.m. November 30, your local time.

2. Questions do not have to go online in November, so don't worry about the queue lengths. This is an honor-system challenge. If you want, you can claim thirty questions' worth of credit if you write the first question on each of thirty quizzes, even if you don't actually finish any of them until QuiWriMo 2011. You can divide up the questions any way you want - quizzes with 10 questions, quizzes with 25 questions, question-quest questions, whatever inspires you.

3. Let us know in the thread what you're going for so that we can all support your efforts! At the end of the month, I'll tally up all the questions I'm told about to see what impact we've made, so post in the thread or send me a message (either forums or main site) if you'd like your total to count. Last year, this challenge produced an amazing 1411 questions!

4. We want everyone to have something to shoot for, no matter his or her level of free time or team engagement. Our goal is to push forward on quantity without sacrificing quality -- we don't want you to feel you have to rush through something that you aren't satisfied with. To provide a range of possible targets, we have five different levels this year:

Team QuiWriMo: As a group, write a team quiz entirely in the month of November.

Local QuiWriMo: Finish two quizzes or crosswords in November. (It's okay to have started them previously.)

National QuiWriMo: Write 30 questions in November. That's at least one per day!

Worldwide QuiWriMo: Write 50 questions in November. That could be a Question Quest badge all by itself!

Galactic QuiWriMo: Write 100 questions in November. That could be ten full quizzes!

If you "go galactic" this year, you'll have automatically satisfied National and Worldwide as well -- and probably Local, too!

You can also choose to add some spice to your own personal challenge. If you have a lot of partially written quizzes, you might commit to write at least one question for each of them. If you aim to write several new quizzes this month, you might challenge yourself to make each one in a different category. You might want to write a whole series of quizzes, start to finish, about similar subjects, or finally finish off that one idea that you had ages ago. Or, if you find yourself avoiding Kyle because of the 17 uncompleted challenge quizzes you've signed up for, this could be a great chance to finish a few off!

Who's with me for QuiWriMo 2010?

Please feel free to leave feedback for the site administrators. We will take all feedback into account as we tweak and add new features.
The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

WriMo comes at an interesting time for me this year: chez CellarDoor, November is Dissertation Writing Month! But I'm going to see if I can complete Local Quiz Writing Month. It'll be nice to spend a little time writing about something different.

I forgot about NaQuiWriMo! ;-) Haha.

I'm in, sign me up for Galactic. I will try to get a bunch of my quizzes done that have been sitting there for ages, attempting to get all of my incompleted quizzes online, or at least completed, in November.

A side challenge, attempt to be in the top 3 most questions written in November. ;-) Toughie, for sure. Haha.

"A side challenge, attempt to be in the top 3 most questions written in November. ;-) Toughie, for sure. Haha."

Salami, that is a toughie! I seem to have lost my notes for #2 and #3, but to beat the top question-writer last year, a body would need 221 questions in the month of November ... we'll see how this year goes!

Last year, Glenda has 221 questions, and had a broken leg, and he used that as his reason for getting so many questions. I was second place with 125, eburge was third with 124. Since Glendathecat doesn't have a broken leg this year, we'll see how I do. ;-)

I shall tentatively commit to writing that encomium of ennui thing during November. Goodness knows I need some kind of push to do it, so far it is a title and "rude" message to Kyle where the introduction should be, in case he came peeping to see how it was going ;-)

I typed that last bit aloud, didn't I?

I replied to the message a week ago. ;)

Do single questions for the Question Quest count?

I'm in, but not aiming for anything in particular.

Single questions counted last year.

I'm going to try to participate! Even if I don't really fulfill any of the categories, I will at least try to step up my contributions around here, which have been quite slim in the last few months ('cause of my darn job!) I have been getting back in the swing of single question writing in the last week or so, so who knows, maybe I can crank out 30 of those :) And will definitely finish my Beatles challenge quiz in November!

What about half-questions written? On my Beatles challenge quiz I have 7 *questions* written, but no interesting info. If I finish it in November do I only get credit for 3 questions, or do I get some credit for writing the I.I. for 7 Qs?

Excellent! This should be a fun month.

"Do single questions for the Question Quest count?"

Absolutely! They won't get you the Local Challenge (which is to finish a quiz or crossword), but they definitely count toward all the ones based on finishing a certain number of questions, and toward the final collective question tally.

"What about half-questions written?"

I'd count them as 1/2 a question, so wrapping up that Beatles quiz would net you 6.5 questions of credit toward this challenge. I don't want to enforce a particular method of quizwriting -- all of a question at once, or writing each question in pieces -- so let's give credit either way!

The challenge is on, Salami! Let's do this. Galactic all the way.

Uh oh, sounds like we're going to get a "Galaxy" of video games quizzes.

Hooray!
And one of Eburge's is about 'Super Mario Galaxy'! :)

Well spotted, Kyle! ;)

I've got a plan for what quizzes I'm going to write. At the moment, it consists of 12 VG, 1 Humanities, and 2 For Children.

Which should, hopefully, bring me up to 200 quizzes.

So far I will try to finish my banal quiz and might have another goa a crossword. I figure my next badge can really only come from writing a few more crosswords and there is not much to do at work at the moment....

I'm going to aim low at Local. I haven't really had the motivation to write this month and maybe this will revive it. I have a half-written quiz just begging to be finished and a Brand quiz to research so I'll try to get those done.

I forgot about my crosswords. I have got 2 or 3 (it's been so long since I looked lol) that have been under construction for months and months now; maybe one of those will get finished - that would be nice :-D
