Topic: Quiz Writing Month 2010

Subject: Quiz Writing Month 2010
Date: Oct 27 10

You may have heard of National Novel-Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), an international project whose participants try to write a novel within the month of November. From just after midnight on November 1 to just before midnight on November 30, tens of thousands of people spend their spare time cranking out 50,000-word books.

I don't know about you, but I don't have the time to write a novel. Instead, building on our success from last year, I'd like to propose a FunTrivia version by declaring November a Quiz-Writing Month (QuiWriMo). The goal is to set each of you fine authors a personal challenge to step up your quiz- and question-writing in the month of November. This might mean finishing off neglected quizzes sitting in your word processor, or going for the Question Quest badges, or making progress on a Challenge or Commission quiz, or writing new works from scratch. Your mission: write more questions than usual in the month of November!

To make the rules a bit more specific:

1. Only questions written in November count. You can do research or outlining in advance, but not the writing! (For example, say you have four questions written on a fifteen-question quiz, and you finish it up in November. That counts for eleven questions -- the ones written during QuiWriMo.) The challenge runs from 12:01 a.m. November 1 to 11:59 p.m. November 30, your local time.

2. Questions do not have to go online in November, so don't worry about the queue lengths. This is an honor-system challenge. If you want, you can claim thirty questions' worth of credit if you write the first question on each of thirty quizzes, even if you don't actually finish any of them until QuiWriMo 2011. You can divide up the questions any way you want - quizzes with 10 questions, quizzes with 25 questions, question-quest questions, whatever inspires you.

3. Let us know in the thread what you're going for so that we can all support your efforts! At the end of the month, I'll tally up all the questions I'm told about to see what impact we've made, so post in the thread or send me a message (either forums or main site) if you'd like your total to count. Last year, this challenge produced an amazing 1411 questions!

4. We want everyone to have something to shoot for, no matter his or her level of free time or team engagement. Our goal is to push forward on quantity without sacrificing quality -- we don't want you to feel you have to rush through something that you aren't satisfied with. To provide a range of possible targets, we have five different levels this year:

Team QuiWriMo: As a group, write a team quiz entirely in the month of November.

Local QuiWriMo: Finish two quizzes or crosswords in November. (It's okay to have started them previously.)

National QuiWriMo: Write 30 questions in November. That's at least one per day!

Worldwide QuiWriMo: Write 50 questions in November. That could be a Question Quest badge all by itself!

Galactic QuiWriMo: Write 100 questions in November. That could be ten full quizzes!

If you "go galactic" this year, you'll have automatically satisfied National and Worldwide as well -- and probably Local, too!

You can also choose to add some spice to your own personal challenge. If you have a lot of partially written quizzes, you might commit to write at least one question for each of them. If you aim to write several new quizzes this month, you might challenge yourself to make each one in a different category. You might want to write a whole series of quizzes, start to finish, about similar subjects, or finally finish off that one idea that you had ages ago. Or, if you find yourself avoiding Kyle because of the 17 uncompleted challenge quizzes you've signed up for, this could be a great chance to finish a few off!

Who's with me for QuiWriMo 2010?

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

I'm almost up to 25 which means I'm ahead of schedule on questions. Feels good. :)

First 10 question quiz just gone on line, second submitted, which means I'm already two thirds through the 30 I said I'd do. Have a couple of ideas for No. 3 but havn't decided which to go with yet.

have fallen into the trap of trying to do too many quizzes at the same time .... end result ... all are at different stages of incompletion.

says to self .... take a deep breath and then ... only one, only one.

Have 8 questions approved by editors in Question quest. Will try to use day off tomorrow to begin writing quizzes.

Wow, I am really bowled over by all this progress! Not to mention our new QuiWriMo participants: welcome! To anyone else out there, you can sign up through November 30, but you might be at a little bit of a competitive disadvantage. :-)

I am a little embarrassed to say it in this august company, but I am personally very pleased with the 2 questions I've written so far this month, given how little writing time I have these days! They finish a quiz I've had sitting around since August, and I hope to type them all in and get it submitted soon. Then I'll be halfway to Local!

I am up to 23 questions. Still not even a quarter of the way there. ;-)

I'll say Local just now (I've already got a quiz up this month, haha :P). I might consider National, but I'll have to go work out how many questions I've written this month so far. :)

I've done 12 so far and have decided to go for Worldwide :D Only 38 to go!

I'd set my sights on Local but have just submitted quiz #2, so have re-aligned and will have a crack at 'Worldwide' as well

I have just put another one in the queue, so that brings it to 4 quizzes/40 questions once they're all online. I shall have to squeeze out another ten Qs to get the 50 now! Not sure what about lol, but I hope to come up with something :-D

You know, Row, they don't have to be online to count. They just have to be written in November. So you're already at 40, whether they're online or not. ;-)

Nope, I once had one that didn't make it online so I refuse to count them until they are.

Haha, you still wrote them, though, didn't you? ;-) Haha.

But that's a good point. If they don't make it online, they shouldn't count... But you can count them until then, right? ;-)

I'm doing better than I thought this month. One question shy of 40.

I've done 5 singles, but only one has been accepted so far, so I'm not counting them until they're all accepted.

They both went online overnight (my time lol) so I can count them now :-) Just 10 more Qs for Worldwide!

I have, at last, managed to proof read my completed quiz (just as well, as I found a major mistake in it) and submit it. Still only five questions done, but I do have another quiz in the planning stages. I'm just not very enthusiastic at the moment - not sure why.

My five singles from yesterday are all accepted so that's me up to 25 now.
