Topic: Quiz Writing Month 2010

Posted by: CellarDoor

Subject: Quiz Writing Month 2010
Date: Oct 27 10

You may have heard of National Novel-Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), an international project whose participants try to write a novel within the month of November. From just after midnight on November 1 to just before midnight on November 30, tens of thousands of people spend their spare time cranking out 50,000-word books.

I don't know about you, but I don't have the time to write a novel. Instead, building on our success from last year, I'd like to propose a FunTrivia version by declaring November a Quiz-Writing Month (QuiWriMo). The goal is to set each of you fine authors a personal challenge to step up your quiz- and question-writing in the month of November. This might mean finishing off neglected quizzes sitting in your word processor, or going for the Question Quest badges, or making progress on a Challenge or Commission quiz, or writing new works from scratch. Your mission: write more questions than usual in the month of November!

To make the rules a bit more specific:

1. Only questions written in November count. You can do research or outlining in advance, but not the writing! (For example, say you have four questions written on a fifteen-question quiz, and you finish it up in November. That counts for eleven questions -- the ones written during QuiWriMo.) The challenge runs from 12:01 a.m. November 1 to 11:59 p.m. November 30, your local time.

2. Questions do not have to go online in November, so don't worry about the queue lengths. This is an honor-system challenge. If you want, you can claim thirty questions' worth of credit if you write the first question on each of thirty quizzes, even if you don't actually finish any of them until QuiWriMo 2011. You can divide up the questions any way you want - quizzes with 10 questions, quizzes with 25 questions, question-quest questions, whatever inspires you.

3. Let us know in the thread what you're going for so that we can all support your efforts! At the end of the month, I'll tally up all the questions I'm told about to see what impact we've made, so post in the thread or send me a message (either forums or main site) if you'd like your total to count. Last year, this challenge produced an amazing 1411 questions!

4. We want everyone to have something to shoot for, no matter his or her level of free time or team engagement. Our goal is to push forward on quantity without sacrificing quality -- we don't want you to feel you have to rush through something that you aren't satisfied with. To provide a range of possible targets, we have five different levels this year:

Team QuiWriMo: As a group, write a team quiz entirely in the month of November.

Local QuiWriMo: Finish two quizzes or crosswords in November. (It's okay to have started them previously.)

National QuiWriMo: Write 30 questions in November. That's at least one per day!

Worldwide QuiWriMo: Write 50 questions in November. That could be a Question Quest badge all by itself!

Galactic QuiWriMo: Write 100 questions in November. That could be ten full quizzes!

If you "go galactic" this year, you'll have automatically satisfied National and Worldwide as well -- and probably Local, too!

You can also choose to add some spice to your own personal challenge. If you have a lot of partially written quizzes, you might commit to write at least one question for each of them. If you aim to write several new quizzes this month, you might challenge yourself to make each one in a different category. You might want to write a whole series of quizzes, start to finish, about similar subjects, or finally finish off that one idea that you had ages ago. Or, if you find yourself avoiding Kyle because of the 17 uncompleted challenge quizzes you've signed up for, this could be a great chance to finish a few off!

Who's with me for QuiWriMo 2010?

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Until I read this, I didn't realise that some people didn't play one country. Like L-T, I usually play early morning (UK time) so must have played before the quiz was pulled. Although I have the 195 day badge, I'm still playing as quite a few of the quizzes are new on this circuit.

I'm in for local QuiWriMo.

As for the Team QuiWriMo, has it to be a totally new quiz? Our team has a team quiz that still sits on 9 questions for a while. I guess inspiration has dried up.

I'll go for National.

How cool would it be if Terry awarded badges for these. I know it won't happen, but it would still be nice. Not that I'm scrounging for badges, really.

Hint, hint :D

I don't think there'll ever be badges for "speed submissions" because they would encourage people to submit carp for the sake of trying to get the badges and it overloads the editors. This came up before over on "the other side" in the forums, once or twice. It's the same reason there isn't a 20 categories badge iirc. The thread(s) will be there somewhere, I just can't find them :-D

"they would encourage people to submit carp for the sake of trying to get the badges" - So now there's a badge for fish?

"As for the Team QuiWriMo, has it to be a totally new quiz? Our team has a team quiz that still sits on 9 questions for a while. I guess inspiration has dried up."

That was my initial idea, but it doesn't look like a lot of teams are inspired by it. Let's make the Team QuiWriMo more like Local -- finish a team quiz in November. If the quiz-writing month can provide inspiration to get some quizzes off the ground, let's do it! Perhaps our fearless Moderator could modify the original post...

""they would encourage people to submit carp for the sake of trying to get the badges" - So now there's a badge for fish?"

No no, that's the point -- we need to discourage people from submitting fish! It makes the site rather smelly and, if you think it's a problem when quizzes are time-dependent, you should try fish! Whoa nelly.

Unless I miss my guess (always a strong possibility), QuiWriMo has already begun in some parts of the world. Anybody started writing yet?

Well it's still only Oct 31 for several more hours for me, but I've been working on my Beatles challenge quiz today. I'm bored lol. All of my already-written questions now have II sections completed, so those won't count for me for the QuiWriMo challenge... I might write the other three questions and II sections today too, we'll see. I've refrained from writing single questions in the last few days, though, waiting for tomorrow! :)

Can't start work on my quizzes until I get back from my exam in about 4 hours time. :(

Good luck with the exam eburge.

I had an idea for a new BT quiz, but the format was already being used by another player. I've asked for, and been given, their blessing to go ahead. So now, I have a quiz to write!

Thanks leith :D Didn't do as bad as I thought I would ;P

Well and truly into the quiz writing now. Should be ready to submit the first quiz in the next few hours.

In true Ethan style, I procrastinated for a few hours. I've now finished and submitted. Hoping all goes well, this will be 8 questions written this month (6 full questions plus 4 lots of interesting information for existing questions).
Next quiz, go!

I had a sudden inspiration today and have already written 5 questions! Hopefully will finish it tomorrow, if I do it will be the quickest I've ever written a quiz. But no pressure there. :)

Excellent! Glad to hear the exam went well and that quizwriting is well underway. We have 19 confirmed participants so far, but anyone still interested should feel free to sign up at any point during the month! Let's make this a great 30 days for trivia.

I have just done four Qs for what is shaping up to be a good quiz :-D I am grinning smugly and jigging in my chair lol - you know that beautiful beautiful moment when Inspiration strikes, and as you make a start you just KNOW this one is going to go well?
AND it will count for QuiWriMo, AND it's (well hopefully) going in Sport of all places, AND it is all Nightmare's own fault for providing the inspiration! :-D
Oh and, can anyone thing of any synonyms for "dedicated" (like being dedicated to something, like "He was a dedicated player" type thing?) please?
