Topic: Seriously Miscast Actors/Actresses

Subject: Seriously Miscast Actors/Actresses
Date: Nov 21 10

On the 'Worst Actors/Actresses' thread on this board, trojan suggested a thread on miscast actors/actresses , so here it is.

My choice for seriously miscast actor is going to get me into a lot of trouble, but Sean Connert would not have been my first choice for James Bond. Nor was it Ian Fleming's, the creator of the superspy. Fleming's Bond-in-the-books is a suave, sophisticated, elegant chap, and Fleming's first choice was Cary Grant (that idea got nixed by the producers who couldn't afford Grant's asking price!). Others on Fleming's list - David Niven (who turned down the role because he felt he was too old, even though he had played Bond in 'Casino Royale'), Stewart Granger, James Mason and Rex Harrison. Fleming referred to Connery as 'an over-developed stuntman'.

Most seriously miscast actress? Much as I liked her in other roles, it has to be Jean Simmons as Julie Merigon in 'The Big Country'. What the heck is a girl from Lower Holloway in London doing running a ranch on the great plains of the United States. Give me a break!

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Lochalsh The forthcoming film about my life will be seriously miscast if anyone but Isabella Rossellini plays the starring role.

lesley153 I was thinking Maureen Lipman for mine.

Lochalsh There's a new thread for such conjectures under Movies, you know? :)

I think Ms. Lipman would do quite well for you. Added bonus: There's a bit of Vanessa Redgrave in her appearance. :p

trojan11 You mean that kinda drawn 'Im dead' look?

Lochalsh You're in trouble, estimado trojan, big trouble! :)

lesley153 The difference between those two is that I like Maureen Lipman but can't stand the Redgrave woman. *ugh* I seem to remember her husband saying that even her friends don't like her.

Lochalsh My daughter met her at a private party and said she was quite lovely. I myself value her for her acting.

I'll stop this. I don't want to hijack Cym's thread.

lesley153 Whoops yes, got a bit carried away there - sorry, Cym.

Serious miscasting, Cher or Madonna in just about anything they did, especially Moonstruck (suppress vomit reflex) and Dick Tracy respectively. Oh, I forgot Desperately Seeking Talent (or was that Susan). Stick to singing ladies, it's what you are good at. Apart from Madonna, she's only good at using people as stepping stones to further her attempt at global domination. As for male miscastings, Tom Cruise in anything that requires charisma. The s*x scenes in Eyes Wide Shut were painful to watch and that was with his wife. He is getting to the age where his looks and his cheesy smile will not guarantee him a part so hopefully he will vanish and become a priest of scientology or whatever. Mel Gibson in Braveheart and Dick Van Dyke in anything where he is required to do an accent. Painful.

And I think Lesley should be played by Diana Rigg or Prunella Scales, only these fine actresses could do her justice.

I'm not going to be happy if anyone but Dawn French plays me !

It's too bad Margaret Rutherford is dead. She'd have been the ideal choice to star in a biopic about me! My other choice would be Joyce Grenfell, but she, unfortunately, is telling George not to do that behind the Pearly Gates. I guess I'll have to settle for Rhys Ifans in drag.

Back to the seriously miscast...Elizabeth Taylor in 'Giant'. She was about as believable as a rancher's wife as Jean Simmons was as a rancher in 'The Big Country'!

lesley153 Thanks, Mike. The cheque is in the post. :)

Tom Hanks in almost all the movies he's made. Astronaut? Army captain? Professor? FBI agent? Baseball coach?
Forrest Gump was a perfect fit.

callie_ross Wow ssabreman, that's a little harsh, isn't it?

...and I quote "Take That is just another run of the mill, cookie cutter boy band which will be here today & forgotten tomorrow, I'm sure! Not many people even know they exist; I rest my case!"
Now really, who's harsh?

callie_ross Yeah, but I wasn't referring to them as being mentally handicapped or stupid like you were to Tom Hanks! That's far from the truth!

It's not harsh if it is the truth. Hanks doesn't look like an FBI Agent or an Army captain.

callie_ross That's not the part of his post I was referring to as being a little harsh, Anton. I meant his comment about Forrest Gump being a perfect fit. Tom Hanks is neither slow witted or stupid & it seemed like he was implying that he is. I don't know, maybe that's not what he was getting at & if I'm wrong, I apologize to ssabreman
