When casting them in movies? They look like they can bang some heads around. Hanks doesn't.

I've never been much of a Hanks fan. I've always found him to be loud and obnoxious. Big, Splash, Money Pit etc.
He did change my mind with Philadelphia, and Forrest Gump which is one of my favourite movies, btw.
But Road to Perdition? A hitman? Not even close to what I picture as a hitman.

I actually liked Hanks in "Road to Perdition"; I couldn't picture who else would play a hitman who has a change of heart. Such a role calls for an actor who comes across as a man of emotion or feeling. I found Hanks quite believable.

If you are casting men to play army officers for a present day war movie, I would agree with you. In World War II not too many guys had the look of big time head bashers. The vast majority of soldiers weren't much more than average joes. Also, it would have been extremely rare to see an officer with the rank of Captain any younger than Hanks was at the time.
In Saving Private Ryan, I thought he was well cast and completely believable as a Captain who was able to control his troops as well as his own emotions, and to show leadership through courage, intelligence and reason.

How about Julia Ormond as Sabrina in the remake? She has none of the luminescence or charm that Audrey Hepburn brought to the role, and she was too old for the part!

I completely agree with Cymruambyth. Sabrina was one of my favourite movies and though the remake of the classics never are quite the same I was quite disappointed with this one.

I am going to have to go with Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.
I like Jeff Bridges as an actor and he his acting in this movie is good, but he is just not the right man to play the role, which was first played by John Wayne.

Jeffrey Deaver's "The Bone Collector" was made into a movie starring Angelina Jolie and Denzel Washington in the two lead roles. In my opinion, both are miscast in their roles, and Angelina Jolie can't act her way out of a paper bag anyway. If you've ever read the book, the movie is a serious disappointment for numerous reasons. In fact, any resemblance between the movie and the book is purely coincidental.

Tom Cruise as Lestat in "Interview with the Vampire" made me want to vomit. :) Colin Farell as Alexander the Great was not great. Winona Ryder as Jo March in "Little Women" did not work for me. There are so many more that I can't think of right now.

Paige, you want to see the 1949 version if you want major miscasting! June Allyson as Jo (about 15 years too old for the part!), Elizabeth Taylor as Amy, Margaret O'Brien as Beth and Janet Leigh who played the older sister Meg, even though she was only 22 as opposed to Allyson's 32. I rather enjoyed Winona Ryder's 'Jo' and I thought Susan Sarandon was the best of the three Marmees in the various screen versions.

I thought Sean Connery playing a Russian submarine commander with a Scottish accent in "The Hunt for Red October" was histerical

Malcolm McDowell in 'Royal Flash'. In the books Flashman is tall and well built, with dark hair and whiskers. The whole theme of the books is that no-one could ever believe that such a fine figure of a man was a coward. Flashy convincingly blusters his way through his escapades.
McDowell was fair-haired and wasn't physically imposing. Morever, no-one would have been taken in by his blustering, he had 'coward' stamped all over him.
I'm not sure who should have played him - perhaps a younger Oliver Reed (cast as Bismark in the film) or even Alan Bates (cast as Rudi Von Sternberg).

After watching "Bladerunner", I thought that Rutger Hauer would have been perfect for the part having read the book a couple of years before. I was pleasantly surprised when I found that Anne Rice liked him as well. Alas by the time the movie was filmed, Hauer was a little too old to play the Lestat.

I really dislike Tom Cruise in general but I really liked his performance as Lestat. He was quite different to how I pictured him from the books but I still thought he did a good job.

I liked Tony Curtis as Sidney Falco in "Sweet Smell Of Success". He stole the movie from Burt Lancaster and should have been nominated for an Oscar but the movie was a box office flop. I thought he was laughable as Eric in "The Vikings" and Antoninus in "Spartacus" both with a Bronx accent.

Will Ferrell in Bewitched. Just didn't come close to what I remember about the original character.

Bernie, you and I must be the only two people who saw 'Sweet Smell of Success' - a brilliant film, and I agree with you about Curtis' work in it. I thought Burt Lancaster was superb as the ruthless coumnist, too.
Curtis was capable of good work (my favourite film of his, "Some Like it Hot') but I remember almost falling out of the balcony when I saw 'Son of Ali Baba' and he came out with that great line, "Yound lies the castle of my father", delivered in pure Brooklynese.
Mikeeagle, Will Farrell is miscast in just about anything. He has all the screen charisma of a pancake. To give him his due, though, he wasn't attempting to recreate the same character (Darren) of the original TV series. He was playing an actor, playing Darren!
