Yes you're right both were directed by Ernst Lubitsch, so I must be careful in the future which movies I mention in my guesses!
;-)
"In the Good Old Summertime" from 1949 with Judy Garland and Van Johnson also used the same story, but transferred it to a music store, you know they had to give Judy Garland a reason to sing. ;-)
Buster Keaton had a minor role in this one as store clerk and nephew of the shopowner (played by S.Z. Sakall of "Casablanca" fame). Sakall is also proud owner (but terrible player) of a Stradivari. This violin is important to the plot and causes some misunderstandings, but to make a long story short, at one point Keaton crashes a violn with falling on it. "In the Good Old Summertime" is a really charming movie, but Buster Keaton's wrecking of the violin alone would make it worth watching, it's incredible!
Okay, is your movie based on a novel or stage play?

Tori: no, it's pre-1970
Picard: Keaton was a treat to watch at any time.
This movie is partly based on a book. Not based on a play, but it does have an intermission lol.

Scrap that, with an intermission, I am thinking of Monty Python, but not sure which one. Is it the one based on King Arthur, with th ekiller rabbit and the knights who say Ni? Sorry, can't think of the title.

It does not take place in Europe.
Gunga Din is an excellent guess, but that movie is both too old and it's not in colour.
It's not any of the Monty Python movies.
