Well I wouldn't call the stars in this movie "legends", but three of them were pretty well known at the time and a fourth is the daughter of a bonafide movie legend.
And yes, this movie was based on a book (of the same time).
No, it's not "Guns of Navarone" or "Green Berets". And no, this movie didn't have Niven, Peck, Quinn or Wayne in it.

Also , this movie is not your "typical" war drama - there's also romance.

I thought that was a very good guess Paul, but this movie is even more of a "downer" than that one, especially in the romance department.
