Or maybe... Treasure Planet? (I love that soundtrack. John Rzeznik wrote it. I can't recall if this is a Disney film, though, but I hope it's not and this is the winning guess!)

Not The Last Unicorn. Remember, this film is entirely animated and from between 1970 and 1989. Everything else has already been guessed.

Maybe it's a movie that was "first" at doing something.. such as "The Adventures of Mark Twain" (first fully claymation), or "Starchaser Legend of Orin" (first 3D animated movie).
(can you tell I'm running out of ideas here??? lol)

We need a clue! I'm out of non-Disney American animated musicals.

All right, because I'm getting a LOT of repeats from people who don't read the previous posts, I'll post what we have so far:
It is a completely animated musical full-length non-Disney children's film released between the years of 1970 and 1989, inclusive.
It is not these movies:
Abra Cadabra
All Dogs to Heaven
American Pop
An American Tail
The Brave Little Toaster
The Care Bears Movie
Charlotte's Web
Gulliver's Travels
I Go Pogo
Journey Back to Oz
The Land Before Time
The Last Unicorn
Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure
Rock and Rule
The Secret of NIMH
Shinbone Alley
The Wind in the Willows
Any Chipmunks film
Any holiday film
Any Mr. Magoo film
Any Peanuts film
Sort of a hint: I said earlier that the movie should be famous to this day for a particular reason, but I have heard from a couple people recently who didn't even realize that it was a movie.
One more thing: it is traditionally animated (i.e. hand-drawn).
