It came out about the same time as Cabaret, though.

That's the one! I saw the original Broadway cast at the National Theatre in Wsshington DC when I was in high school. What a great play! The movie, not so much. You're up.

I like the stage version too, but must confess I never saw the movie! I even wanted to learn playing the violin because of it ... I mean, when it has this effect on the Ladies! ;-))
Okay, I have one, a British movie, post 1970.

According to my cousin, who has genealogy as a hobby, I am a direct descendant of Edward Rutledge (Molasses to Rum to Slaves). I don't know if it's true, but if it is, I want to know where the money went. Is your movie set in Britain?

are you a "dark" comedy? And if so, are you "An American Werewolf in London"?

Yes it was released after 1975, no Peter Sellers or Terry Thomas in it, sorry. It's not any of the movies mentioned so far.
No, it's no dark comedy at all; it's a comedy, but with quite a few reflective moments too.
I just saw that it is officially listed as co-production between the UK and the US, but honestly going by plot, style, and actors involved, it is purely a British movie imo.

Is there lots of music? Is it "The Commitments"?

No, apart from a usual movie soundtrack, music doesn't play a part in it.

No Dutch Girls in this one!
A hint, it is the movie adaptation of a rather successful stage play.
