No it's not the USA, it's a European country.
And no Oscar Wilde either; I highly enjoyed An Ideal Husband, Rupert Everett just seems to be the perfect Oscar Wilde actor!
Another hint: The play premiered just a few years before the movie was made. After having won numerous stage awards for her portrayal, the leading actress reprised her role in the movie which eventually also earned her an Oscar nomination.

It's not Shakespeare in Love.
Jakeroo this is a wonderful guess, movie director and original playwright are correct, but it's another movie released 6 years after Educating Rita.

Yup Jakeroo, you're up, it's Shirley Valentine.
I think this movie might not be that well known outside the UK, but I can only recommend it!
When I first saw it (it's one of the favorites of a relative of mine), I was kinda suspicious, but ended up really enjoying it. Must say, I was hooked from the first lines on when Shirley enters the kitchen saying (quote from imdb):
Hiya Wall.
[to the camera]
Well what's wrong with that? There's a woman three doors down talks to her microwave. Talking to a microwave! Wall, what's the world coming to?

Sounds interesting Picard : )
Next up is an American sci-fi (leaning slightly towards horror) movie.

Not any of the Alien movies, sorry.
This film debuted an actor and an actress who are fairly well known these days.

Based on that information, I'd have to say it's "Altered States."

You're absolutely right Daver
for anyone actually reading these things, this movie was loosely based on sensory deprivation research conducted by a real person (Dr. John C. Lilly). And it was the first feature film for both William Hurt and Drew Barrymore..yes yes I know people will swear it was E.T., but it wasn't lol

Okay, one of my favorite movies (hope it hasn't been used before). American film, color, romantic fantasy.
