Thanks Jakeroo - sorry for the long delay - it's been a huge week at work.
So, this next film also involves a lot of music and was made in the UK in the 1980s. It had a strong political message regarding the dangers of extremism.

Work is a four letter word ~
No worries about delays. But if you're gone a week, we're likely to send out Search and Rescue (just in case lol).
Okay, the first one that comes to mind would be Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984).

Not 1984, Jakeroo. But there are certainly themes of alienation and a dystopian society. This film is not based on a book.

Well dang. I quite liked the music by the Eurhythmics in that one.
Okay, how about "It Couldn't Happen Here"?

No, not "It Couldn't Happen Here".
In this film, the story is mostly told through the songs; the dialogue is there to link these pieces together. The music has also been turned into a visually spectacular stage show. (But it's a LONG way from Andrew Lloyd Webber!)

visually spectacular stage show? Could it be "Pink Floyd The Wall"?

It was definitely right wing extremism, Daver.
Jakeroo has got it correct!! "The Wall" starring Bob Geldof as Pink was released in 1982. It was based on Pink Floyd's double album of the same name. The film is visually confronting and deals with Pink's alienation from society despite his success as a rock star. This personal crisis is played out to a backdrop of developing right-wing extremism, which reflected concerns many felt about British society at the time of the Falklands War. If you like Pink Floyd's music then see this film (although you probably have already). If you hate Pink Floyd, don't go. If you're in the middle, at least try it on DVD :-)

I've seen the film and I've been to one of their concerts (which is why I guessed it based on your clues). However, being the old bag that I am, my favourite PF is Dark Side of the Moon. I found it amusing when my young nieces starting raving about that one (along with the Beatles) a few years back... "Auntie Jake, have you heard about this band? - they're really really good!!" ... Ermm yes, I have them on vinyl - but they don't know what that means, so didn't bother to explain, just agreed and sang a few lyrics with them ~~~.
ANYHOO, speaking of politics, I am an American movie, in colour.

Yes, the 'political' did give it away a little!
So, let's continue that theme. Another US movie that's overtly about politics...

No Mommakat. In this film the politics were very contemporary.
