I saw the movie Machete. Considering the clues garnered so far, didn't think the guess was silly ... the movie, on the other hand ...
I'm at a loss, so I suppose I'll ask some questions rather than guess at the title. Is the "legend" as old as, say, Clint Eastwood or Burt Lancaster?. And, was the movie released in the 1980's?

He is between Eastwood, born in '30 & Lancaster born in'13 but closer to Lancaster.
The film was indeed released in the '80s.

Well Jack Palance fits the age criteria and he was in a film called City Slickers around that time. So was this what you were looking for? The sequel was City Slickers: Curley's Gold but I don't think he was actually in that physically.
