The original "Carrie" is a little more than a decade too early. You might want to guess a director first (he's had quite a "body" of work in the genre).

The director was married twice to actresses, but they aren't all that famous. He was banned from making films for life after the war because of working for the Germans. Jean-Paul Sartre was one of his supporters and the ban was reduced to two years.
The film is not set in France.
