The real person died in the late 30's. He is probably only really famous amongst his own "circle" though, so the name might not help many folks much.
But perhaps this will: the movie was mostly filmed in the "deep South" of the U.S.
A totally insipid movie by the same name (but had nothing in common with this one) was released in 2002
