Pay the man! "Pajama Party" (1964) is correct. It was, of course, part of the "beach" series starring the lovely ex-Mouseketeer.

Slight correction, the short story was written near the onset of WWII, not before. Didn't want to get anyone off track so soon.

Yes, he was actually born near my hometown at the turn of the 20th century (check my profile). He's not very well known himself but his short story was turned into an iconic movie that was filmed twice. I still prefer the original B/W version myself.
