Did the main star(s) appear in the movie AND the musical show?

The main star - playing the lead - was not in the original stage show. One of the supporting stars (the other main part, really) was.

No. No Rex Harrison.
There is an English male actor in one of the leading roles (not mentioned above) but the lead is a woman.

Divine decadence, darling! You are correct!
Did you know that Cabaret holds the record for the most Oscars won without winning Best Picture? It was nominated but the Godfather won. I suspect the jury was leant on.
What film are you? :)

On a similar theme - this movie surely had a shout at several Academy Awards but only won one.
It's a noir from the 70s and it's about as good as it gets.

was it noir enough to be filmed in B&W?

Not TLPC.
Not filmed in B&W.
Clue: the director appeared in a cameo; the lead actor has done some directing in his time; and one of the key parts was played by another director.

Not anything by Peckinpah.
Nor anything starring Hoffman.
Set in LA.

Was Al Pacino in it?
I don't think it's noir but I'll guess "Dog Day Afternoon" because it had a lot of people in it. And it was great.

Dog Day Afternoon was great alright, but no.
This movie was up against a Pacino film for the Oscars.
