The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Who could have seen this coming?

Another member of the 27 club. Sadly not all that unexpected.

Somehow that didn't surprise me, but I'm surprised that it didn't happen sooner.

lesley153 I've just spotted it
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14262237
and I am shocked. Yes, I know it was expected, but it's still a shock: and a horrible waste of another young life.

It is sad but inevitable. Too bad someone couldn't have intervened and prevented this. She has been on a never ending road to destruction for years.

I think a lot of people tried, HB, but if the person refuses either to accept help or accept there is a problem, then very little can be done. A tragic waste of a young life.

I thought Ms. Winehouse's singing was terrible, so I'll have to admit that I was NOT a fan. However, it's tragic when young people lose their lives that way, whether or not they are famous.

Maybe Amy Winehouse figured the only way she'd be remembered was to join the '27 club'.

s-m-w Amy got what she wanted from life and finished it as everyone expected she would!
90 plus people die in a horrific attack, all this happens within a very few hours.
Life is fleeting, and not to be wasted.
What a strange and twisted world we live in.

callie_ross She did it to herself, so I'm sorry but I don't much sympathy. She was warned by doctors to stop her chain smoking & to stop smoking crack but she refused to listen. Her lungs were giving out on her, she was in the beginning stages of Emphysema but yet she kept on with her destructive ways. If you've ever watched someone die of Emphysema like I have, then you would know what a horrible illness it is. She threw away her life & it is very sad for someone to die so young. You only get 1 life & it's sad to watch someone destroy themselves.

callie_ross OOPS! It's supposed to say: "So I'm sorry but I don't HAVE much sympathy". Sorry!

Honeybee, I've seen this kind of response many times today over this topic. Each time, I cringe. This could not have been prevented because Amy did not want to be helped. Even if everybody in her life tried to step in and get her the help she needed, she still would have refused it because she simply did not want to be helped.

I feel for her parents who knocked themselves out trying to get her to stay in rehab, but she'd always check herself out. This young woman was self-destructive, and one can only wonder what it is about fame and adulation that ruins so many young lives - Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Janis Joplin, Robert Downey Jr., Jimi Hendrix...the list is endless.

... Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Brian Jones, Robert Johnson,
John Belushi... I think Downey Jr. is gathering up the pieces and doing well for himself.

Question: if someone you cared about, loved, was acting 'out of it', wouldn't you do more than just notice they were out of it?

Yes, I realize many people have tried to help Amy. I also understand people cannot be helped unless they want and accept that help. I also know if people I knew were acting differently from themselves, I would most certainly be asking very pointed questions (and I am noted for getting answers to my questions).

I would just do what I would want done for me if I were caught up in my life and were out of control.

To die alone is the final step of a lonely life.

lesley153 She "seemed out of it"? and "she believed it was 'only a matter of time' before her daughter died"? Some articles I've read about Ms Winehouse mentioned her father. I think this is the first mention I've seen of her mother. Wonder why.

Granted you can't judge from reading news articles, but the quotes here make her sound almost as "out of it" as her daughter.

I expect her mother was probably a bit 'out of it' after losing her daughter. I'd imagine she's tried many times over the years to help Amy, but there probably comes a point where you think you've given all you possibly can and it's not made a blind bit of difference.

I feel sympathy for her family and friends and for Amy. She was obviously a troubled person and I truly believe that some people are just born that way.

lesley153 Sally, I expect you've hit the nail on the head, about her mother, and about her troubledness. The path of genius never does run smooth.

DR.NO

Amy Winehouse was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression), which can be of varying severity. The problem is that the disease is adult onset and individuals cannot be forced to comply with medical regimens and interventions. There's also the issue of denial - can you imagine how tough it would be after having been mentally healthy your whole life to be diagnosed with mental illness? Also, when one is wealthy, talented, surrounded by people eager to please them, works in a business where drug use/abuse is rampant, AND is bipolar the combination can be (and in Amy's case) was toxic.

I've been feeling sad since I heard the news yesterday. I had really really hoped she'd get her life straightened out. Mental illness often manifests itself through self-destructive behaviors. I didn't know she had been diagnosed BiPolar but I'd always felt she must be depressed. I really admired her talent and hope history remembers that and not just her tragic lifestyle.
