It's sad but not unexpected.

No, I didn't know about the Manic Depression diagnosis either. (Either it was very recent, or I don't read enough "celeb" articles.) That may well explain the differences between her clarity and focus in the recording studio, and stumbling on stage.

As many have said, very sad but not completely unexpected.
Hopefully, she will be remembered for her music rather than the circus that invariably followed her. Not a great fan myself (didn't like all the unnecessary swearing),but at least she was original and different to the usual 'clone musicians' we have to make do with today. And "Back To Black" was one of the better albums of the last 20 years. IMO,anyway.

daymare, and others who are asking "Why didn't someone do something?"
It really Doesn't work that way. My husband was an alcoholic and addict, and trying to *make* him better did nothing for him, and almost destroyed me. Interventions, as seen on TV, almost never do any good in real life, unless they just happen to come at a time when the addict is ready to make a change.

Alcoholic father..brother..various other relatives. Some are also into drugs.
I understand about trying to do something. I tried...was banned from the family for that attempt. Finally, I realized I had to do 'something' for me. Doing something doesn't always mean for the person who is currently in jeopardy.
I get it that real life isn't cookies and milk. I also know all I've been reading is how bad Amy was and how her life was going downhill. She checked herself out of rehab and was acting 'out of it'. I guess that means everyone who 'cared' about her just said 'that's Amy' and didn't do anything else.
I've already lost my family because I cared. I guess I should have just decided there was nothing I could do.

C4 put on a very affectionate, one-hour programme about her yesterday.

There's a "Strong language and adult content" warning. I suppose that means there must have been some swearing in it, but I can't remember it, because (sorry, Paul), I don't take much notice of it.
I wonder how I'd cope with paparazzi camped on my doorstep 24 hours a day, knowing my every move - or how I'd feel about paparazzi permanently camped on my neighbour's doorstep. bizarre.

Sorry to hear that, Daymare. :(
"...decided there was nothing I could do."
I don't think so. Giving up? That's not your style.

Frankly, I would arrange for someone to be taking the pictures of the stalkawhatevertheyare. Imagine if their lives, and the lives of their families, were as disrupted as the lives of those they hound.
Being famous isn't supposed to be horrible...I think...

Even I know when to 'surrender'. Once weapons make an appearance, I make a disappearance.
'Must protect self'. We all need to remember that....

"Once weapons make an appearance" Huh? *grimace*
We must all look after ourselves at all times. Sometimes we forget, though.

Thank you, Mr. Neil Young, for that one.

"We here don't know her."
I thought she was quite well-known in America. She won five Grammies in 2008, and they're an American award.

lesley, I meant we on this thread didn't know her, personally, and probably most of us don't fathom what was going through her head to be so self destructive.

Not much anyone could do since she was completely unwilling to help herself.

Aha! I took "We here don't know her" to mean don't know her music, because I thought it went without saying that most of us didn't know her personally. I shall know better next time. :)

Its another tragedy of a great talent lost at far too young an age toa drug habit they could never kick. I guess this time her demons got the better of Ms. Whinehouse.
