They came bearing whoopie pies (chocolate and pumpkin)
Mom got Ethan out for a while, and he sat on my shoulder (after Stephanie held him briefly, then he flew around and smacked into Mom's leg); when Mom put him back in the cage, she gave him more water (and put vitamins in it)
Oh, and she put his new cuddlebone in the age

Part 5 The Surgeon's Assistant
Note: Not for the faint of heart (while most, if not all, the fictional stories involve graphic descriptions of violence, this one is perhaps more so than most--how to say this without giving anything away? These are two of the most vile creatures The Dark have to offer: The Surgeon, Aleksandr Ardeko, pretends to be a bone surgeon [or maybe he is really], but his greatest joy comes from performing "operations" in order to obtain various organs [some to sell on the blackmarket, others... well... for "reserves"]. His assistant, who has no medical training whatsoever [and doesn't even pretend to] is one Katreena Kharvinosa [who will appear in a later story along with her husband.)

1 Impatience
1, Rehashing the Plan
“You promised me the boy’s pulsing heart by now,” a masculine voice growled menacingly.
“So it takes a little longer than expected,” a woman snapped. –0=”By attempting to evade us, all he does is present us with a challenge—and there’s nothing we like better?”
The man grunted. “But I must have some compensation—“
“And you shall have it, Aleksandr,” she retorted, “but first you need learn some patience. Anything done right requires loads of patience—had you been paying attention, you’d have gotten the lesson long already. The boy will fall, I assure you, and then all his organs will be right there for you to choose from.”
“His genitals will be the first to go, just for making me wait this long.”
“I like it,” the Empress exclaimed, “make him suffer a bit before we clean his vitals out.”

2, In the Trap
“I can’t believe he fell for it,” The Surgeon exclaimed.
“What did I tell you,” The Empress asked.
“Are we really going to—“
“Of course not,” she snapped. “Be reasonable. That girl poses no threat to us whatsoever. It’s just what I told you before: in order to trap him, we must make it realistic. We won’t really hurt her—at most, make a few slashes or something so he doesn’t get suspicious. Then, soon as we’ve got what we want, we free the girl.”
“And you’re sure she won’t jeopardize our mission?”
“What’s she going to do, Aleksandr? Tell me that-apart from stupid old telepathy, she’s got nothing—and we can keep her from getting in touch with him before he gets here. Nothing can go wrong!”
“I’m glad you think so,” Alexandr growled, unconvinced.
“What are you worried about? It’s all fine, you’ll see!”

3, Victory Assured
“What did I tell you, Aleksandr,” The Empress asked, smiling broadly. “Didn’t I predict exactly what he’d do?”
“You did,” he admitted, then broke into a broad smile of his own. “You’re a great assistant, Katreena. I can’t thank you enough—“
“Oh, do stop that!”
“It’s true,” he insisted.
“You can thank me after the operations are complete.”
“Thanks to you, a surefire victory’s assured.”
Katreena dismissed the words with a hand gesture. “It’s all been worth it,” she remarked, “to finally know the boy’s not so tough as he acts.”
“He’s fought us for years,” The Surgeon agreed. “Many of our companions are gone for good courtesy of him. It’s good to finally see him reduced to the same state as they.”
“Are you sure we can’t speed up the surgery? Schedule it for, oh, say, two minutes from now?”
“What’s your hurry—he’s not going anywhere.”
“Seeing as how we can’t torture him yet for fear of jarring some organ we need—“
“Very well,” The Surgeon sighed, rising. “Let’s get the room ready.”

2 Surgery
1, Questions
The young man lay flat on his back, strapped down to the operating table with lengths of thick rope. “Relax,” a voice soothed in his ear, “it’s just a random procedure.”
‘In that case,’ Ontario thought as he fought against his bonds with all the strength in his young body, ‘what are the ropes for? Why tie me up, if what you claim is true?’
“Best not to struggle,” a woman’s voice said from somewhere close to his head. “Don’t want you wearing yourself out now, do we?”
‘That voice,’ the 13-year-old thought, struggling harder than ever,’ I know that voice.’
“Should we sedate him?” The Empress whispered. For a few moments, her companion didn’t answer, merely watching the young man’s futile resistance. Sweat trickled down his forehead, but still he tugged and pulled at his bindings with all the desperation of youth.
Finally, The Surgeon nodded. “Half a syringe, I think—don’t want him too subdued, if you know what I mean.”
“I do indeed,” she said, grabbing hold of the young man’s arm with one hand as she fumbled with the syringe.
“You need to work on that,” The Surgeon grumbled crossly, reaching over to help restrain their captive.
“I’m still new to this,” Katreena spat.
“Just perfect your technique,” he muttered, then grunted in satisfaction. “I doubt he’ll be much trouble anymore.”
“Safe to proceed,” she asked, and her partner nodded. She smiled to herself. She was going to enjoy this very much.

2, Desperation
The 13-year-old cried out involuntarily as the scalpel tore through the tender flesh of his private region. More than once, he nearly passed out from the pain—but desperately clung to consciousness, wracking his brain for some way out of this nightmare. ‘Must be—‘ he thought groggily as a combination of pain and drugs swept over him again and again, like a wave relentlessly pushing him under the surface of a rough sea. ‘Hope will find a way—‘
Then, just as the young man’s vision blurred, he felt a surge of warmth flow through his whole body. ‘What the—‘ he thought, dazed, as the surgical implement was removed from his skin with a jerk. ‘I wonder what—‘ And with that thought he passed out from a mixture of pain and blood loss.

3, Brief Wait
“It doesn’t matter,” Aleksandr Ardeko told his assistant. “He’ll probably bleed more with them anyway.” He paused, then added,”all I really wanted was to make him suffer. I’ve done that; whether he dies with his genitals still attached, is hardly my concern. He’s still losing blood rapidly, so the time is ripe to harvest his organs.”
“Which first?”
“I was thinking the eyes. Shouldn’t be hard. Then, the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs in rapid succession.”
“And he dies knowing he’s saved the very demons he fought against his whole life-I love it!”
“Let’s not waste time talking.”
“Do we wait for him to—“
“I should think so,” The Surgeon replied, smiling. “I fear the drugs we put into his system were mostly to blame for that faint; soon as he comes around, we’ll begin.”

4, Harvest
The young man’s body was cut open and bleeding from multiple wounds as the surgical tool prepared to embed itself in his chest. ‘So, that’s it,’ Ontario thought numbly. ‘I’ve survived this long just to be butchered like a chunk of meat.’
Then, as the waves of agony continued to flood his senses, the 13-year-old slipped down into the Pit of Everlasting Darkness.
Meanwhile, The Empress stood at a nearby table, counting the organs they’d already harvested. “You were right about the eyes,” she remarked to her silent companion, “quite simple.”
He looked up, looking tired but pleased. “Much easier than I thought. Liver, pancreas, intestines, kidneys—its all there. We’ve even got some marrow, should the need arise. All that’s left are the heart and lungs.”
Suddenly, he bent over the operating table with a muttered oath. “Not yet, you don’t!”
She held up a small vial questioningly. “If this will help—“
“Give me that,” he snapped, and once again the syringe was thrust into the young man’s arm. The Surgeon sighed with relief. “Resume, quickly,” he ordered.

3 Escape
1 Narrative
1, Confusion
I still can’t believe I got away! Part of me still wonders how it happened, I being so weak and all. I’ve made Harmony tell me at least five times, and may do so another five before it finally sinks in.
I was stupid to fall for their trick. “You’re not,” she tells me, and I just roll my eyes. Not to be rude or anything, but she would say that—otherwise, she wouldn’t be my girlfriend!
“They’d have found a way,” she tells me, “whether I lured you in or not.” I can’t argue with this; it all goes back to that prophecy.

2, Relief
Katreena Kharvinosa, she who calls herself Empress, was wrong about at least one thing: They were not able to block Harmony’s telepathic abilities—because there was something They didn’t know: Before kidnapping Harmony, and therefore before baiting their trap for me, I’d given her a special ring, keyed to my Power—yet, at the same time, not keyed to it. Confusing, I know, and it’s just as confusing to Activate. In fact, I wasn’t even sure I’d explained it right—but I must have, lest I wouldn’t be here.

3, Terror
I thought I knew what sheer terror felt like, but it wasn’t until I was secured to that operating table that I truly understood what the term “mind-numbing” means. I could also say I’ve experienced many types of pain before—but none even remotely compares with what I felt at The Surgeon’s deadly hands.
I remember lying there and wondering why I didn’t just pass out right there and then. But something—a combination of love and the power of the Ring—kept me going. Until—
Until that moment when my heart fluttered to a stop.
Harmony tells me, at this point, she was turning the Ring around and around, wishing fervently that she could help, and the next thing she knew, my heart started back up. Then it happened once more—and again. The third time, she clutched the miniature eagle on that Ring like a dying woman.
And it was around this time I thought I heard her voice, calling me back to her. And, hard as it was, I swam back into the Universe.

4, Restoration
Just how long I lay in the Hospital Wing, I don’t know. I was unconscious at least a week, during which time I received a liver transplant and what is known as Restorative Surgery.
When I woke up for the first time, I remember being amazed I was still alive. ‘Guess magic does have its uses.’

5, Still At Large
As soon as I was well enough, I asked about The Surgeon and his assistant. “They’re still at large,” Harmony told me. Just thinking about them makes me sick. We’ve got to find them, or else—

2 Flushing Out Evil
1, Waiting
The group huddled in a sideroom off the Hospital Wing. “Where do we start,” a black-haired Councillor asked before anyone else had a chance to speak up.
“I think it best if we wait a few more days,” the Assistant Headmistress suggested, “to see if They do anything to attract our notice.”
“We’re not letting our guard down this time,” the Headmaster interjected, his eyes hard as flint. “We’re just lucky it didn’t turn out worse.”
