Not this time
‘Not this time.’ Instead of “Engaged to Kill” I decided to watch “Deadly Women.” ‘But I’m not missing “Betrayed at 17” again, as I missed over half of it by being in the other room.

The Problem
The problem was, the hand weights were in the bedroom Sunday, so if I wanted to use them I had to go in there. Plus, Grandma was coming the next day and I wanted to see if there were any magazines I could get rid of before she got here. ‘A consequence is missing dialogue vital to understanding of the movie.’

Deadly Women
I wasn’t going to, but at the last minute I decided to watch “Deadly Women,” the first hour being devoted to “Mothers who kill.” The first segment is about Anita, who smothers her three-year-old son, Eric. “Smothering, unfortunately, is an easy thing to do.” She then murders her six-week-old daughter and her other two-year-old son in a two-week time span. “Nobody suspects Juanita,” and she gives birth to a fourth child, Molly. Actually, nurses suspected that the mother was harming her kids, but the doctor in charge disagreed. AzMedical research allows another murder.” ‘Another woman with Munchausen Biproxy Disorder.’ “But in 1971, Juanita isn’t diagnosed.” “SIDS does not run in families, but murder does.” “She [Juanita] gave an alibi to other mothers who killed their children.”
Next: Andrea Yates. ‘One of the women whose profile I read online.’ “Rusty Yates has extreme religious views… Each of their five children is named after a biblical character… The voices in Andrea’s head tell her Satan Is going to take her children.” “For two years, she is in and out of psychiatric treatment, but the medical community limits her stays.” “Andrea truly believed at her core that she was a bad mother… and the only way to save her children was to kill them.””One by one, Andrea takes her children into the bathroom… Noah, the eldest, is the last of the children to die.”
The last segment of that hour is about another woman I read about, Susan Smith. One of the many quotes was, “Why would you be speaking about these kids in the past tense if you thought they were out there somewhere?” And the program ends with these chilling wo rds: “Most women would die to save their children, but not these.”
The next episode is about women “seduced by the dark thrill of the kill.” ‘Very early on, I wondered why this show sounded familiar. Turns out, it was an old rerun. I watched the first segment, in which a twelve-year-old girl is brutally raped and tortured by at least three young women. “Group pressure can overcome an individuall’s instinct for caution.” “Jealousy is probably the most common motivator of murder.” “Shana suffered unimaginable abuse.” “Fifteen-year-old Toni Laurens is the only one to resist.” ‘As if what happened to Shana wasn’t bad enough, her father commits suicide.’
The next story was about Brenda, who goes on a shooting rampage at a nearby elementary school at 16. “Brenda’s .22 caliber rifle is a Christmas present from her father.” “Brenda was a very, very good shot.” Asked why she did it: “I don’t like Mondays.” ‘She fired thirty-six times!’
After that, I changed the channel.

What I missed
It would make a good story title, though hardly anyone would read it: “what I missed while I took a nap.” Specifically, what movies I missed as a result of said nap. ‘I shouldn’t have stayed up to see that movie last night, but it sounded so good.’ Actually, I only missed three quarters of “Unthinkable,” so when “Rivals” came on I was able to hear that. ‘I don’t know what happened, but I later lost interest and turned it off.—perhaps that’s one that can’t just be “in the background.”’

The spill
‘They fill that thing way too full.’ I’d just spilled chicken broth and some noodles from the so up before heating it. ‘Such a mess!’ I tried to clean it up, but as with other spills I’m never really sure if I did a good job or not.

“Oh, no—I know what this is based on!”
In other words, “I really didn’t want to miss that!” ‘Another movie inspired by a murder case I saw on “Deadly Women.”’

I turned the Stopwatch off as soon as it announced four minutes. ‘Depending how I feel, I’ll do more after dinner.’

Lions Club
I was taking a nap when Christy from the Lions Club called to ask if I was going to the dinner at the Country Club. I said I was, and that my grandmother would be providing transportation. ‘So nice to know people communicate with each other!’

“I’m not picking you up before 11, so you don’t have to rush.”
Mom and I said good night, as whenever I turn off the set I’m going to bed.’Lunch isn’t until 1, so I’ll sleep until 8:30. That should give me plenty of time to wash my hair and do whatever else I need to in order to prepare.

Funny Stories
At least, now they are—though they certainly weren’t funny at the time. ‘The holidays are a time for telling all manner of hilarious and/or humiliating stories.’
First, there was the time I was nine and locked Mom out of the apartment (this was after we’d left Mike and Mom had gotten a place of her own). There was an outer door, which usecd a key, and a screen door, which did not. For some unfathomable reason, I had to touch everything. “Ooh, I wonder what this does!” This was back when Mom had to take me to work with her as the SACC program ended at a certain time. And Mom would wear dresses and skirts to her job. So, here she is, this straight dress on, and she goes to the neighbor’s to ask if he had a ladder. “I do,” he replied, laughing, “but what do you want it for?” And so he used the ladder to climb up to the window and “break in” to our apartment so he could let us in. After that, Mom used to joke that she met Tony when he broke in to our apartment (this was when we lived in Cleona). Ironically, Tony’s wife was also named Toni.
Next, there was the time I was “playing a game” and locked myself in the closet. It was the kind of door that just
Has the knob on one side, and a little pointy thing on the other, so you really can’t open it from the inside. I was fourteen, and Mom had just started leaving me home alone. It started withshort trips, like to the store, and gradually worked up to her going to work. I had ccess to either a portable phone or a landline, so Mom was comfortable with this arrangement. But on that day, she called and called, and I didn’t answer, so she ended up leaving the office early. “I’m surprised she didn’t kick down the door,” Michael commented after hearing the story. ‘It didn’t even occur to me to try.’
There was the time when Tiffany was over, and I reached up for something, and pulled down three glass mixing bowls on my head. And the time I pulled the metal cash box down from the toop shelf of my closet, breaking my teeth. I was in that dentist’s chair so many times, Dr. Silverman would ask me “kissed any walls lately?”
Then there was the time I stumbled in the bathroom and stuck my hand through the window. Mom came flying downstairs like she was running from a fire, while Edy didn’t react at all except to ask, “is she OK?”
Then, there was home ec class, in middle school. One of the bullies, Chris Baker, was known as a whiner, and the one day, complained to the teacher: “Mrs. Weaver, Jaymee hit me with her cane!” ‘It was an accident, mind you.’ “I’m sure you deserved it,” was the reply. It’s one of Tiffany’s favorite stories to tell, as it was one of the few classes we actually shared.
I was teased relentlessly in public school, and would often take my aggression out on my fellow students. Trouble was, as I couldn’t see, I had no idea when the teacher was looking, and so got caught every time.
There was the times when Tiffany would run down the hall, closing the top lockers so I wouldn’t slam into them. As soon as she’d pass, those mean kids would open them wide again, then laugh their heads off as I slammed into them.
That then led to a discussion of how much wilder middle schoolers are than high schoollers, though one really couldn’t tell in my school as both junior and senior high were in the same bui, lding. It was: elementary, grades 1-6; middle school and high school, 7-12. Anyway, Mom told of when Elysha was in sixth grade, and Edward in seventh; the middle school was closed four times that year due to bomb threats. =-Once, there was the threat of a shooter, so the kids had to hide under their desks. Another time, the students were sent to the Y as it was close to the school

Jealous
v Before Edward came, Elysha called and got mad at Mom for two reasons. First, “you invited Edward, but not me.” Second, the sixteen-year-old wanted Mom to pick her up. As to the first, the boy invited himself, and we’d have gladly visitecd with Elysha had she walked over. ‘Mom couldn’t have left, and it was unrealistic to think she could have.’ And there’s the teensy fact that she was mad at Edward. “So, y ou want to come over here and argue,” Mom asked her. Even so, we waited a few hours before Mom said, “if she’s not here by now she’s not coming.”

Thanksgiving
Had I known, I’d have held on to the key. But I assumed Mom would be picking me up, as she always does. ‘Grandma had four 12-packs of Coke for me, but I didn’t think she’d stop here first to drop them off.’ She had to go back to the apartment to lock up after dropping me at Mom’s then. ‘Mom opened the door and, in a mock serious v oice, told Grandma she should have left me at home.’
Dinner was around 1, and the guests consisted of Michael and Michelle, whose friends and co-workers call Shelley. “No one calls me Michelle.” ‘She has to be the center of attention;… Grandma didn’t talk to her except when she had to, and left much sooner than she normally does on a holiday.’After Grandma left, Edward and his friend Lainkan stopped over, and we had a really good time—in spite of the things that flew out of Shelley’s mouth. ‘More than once, the f-bomb flew out, and at one point she told Edward, “it’s your hair, for Christ’s sake!”’ The young man said how he often feels unloved and like people don’t understand him. ‘His father’s trying to change his son into what he wants him to be, and there’s no way Edward can be open with Edy due to his fanatical views on things. ‘One of said opinions is that his children should move out as soon as they turn eighteen; seeing as Edward’s birthday is in August, he’ll still have his senior year of high school ahead of him—and I’ve been told, by more than one person, as long as he’s in high school it would be illegal to kick him out; that’s the reason Robbie droopped out of school, so he wouldn’t have to listen to his dad anymore.’
Later, when we talked to say good night, Mom said she hoped I wasn’t upset with her. “I didn’t tell you because I felt it was Edward’s story to tell.” I assured her I wasn’t mad: “There were certain indicators…” ‘Not mad, just left with a lot to think about.’
Oh, and the highlight of the day was when Mom took out the turkey and asked Michael to carve it. He took one look and said, “I’ve never seen a turkey with a dark ]behind] before… it’s upside-down!” Mom kept insisting she hadn’t known because “it was in the bag!”

No infection
‘There will be no infection.’ Although I think I was worried about something on Tuesday when I rubbed my left wrist raw, I’m not sure why. ‘Maybe I was afraid Dr. Smith would address something, and when he didn’t that went away. Or maybe I was concerned my ears would be so sore they’d require medication—like the other times. And, once I started rubbing I couldn’t stop. By then I was stressing because I knew I had to stop, but couldn’t seem to. And maybe Michael was right when he suggested the reason I wore that particular shirt was so I could cover up my wrist. And maybe I wanted her to see today.’ Whatever the reasoning, Mom didn’t notice until this afternoon, and she had a fit. After lecturing me on infection, she slapped a Band-Aid on my wrist, telling me, “you shouldn’t have expected any less; I’m a health care worker after all!”

Movie
“Guess what I’m watching tomorrow,” I asked Mom when I finally got ahold of her. “I don’t know, what.” “You can’t handle the truth.” ‘”A Few Good Men?”’ “Yes!”
“Pet Detective” plays tomorrow again, too, so I may watch that. And other choices include “Matilda,” “The Dog Who Saved Christmas,” “Home Alone 2,” “Love, Actually,” “An Accidental Christmas,” “Dear Santa,” “Twelve Men of Christmas,” “Secret Santa,” “A Very Merry Christmas,” “Home for the Holidays,” “Knocked Up,” “Elf,” “Land of the Lost,” “Burn Notice,” “Covert Affairs,” “Santa Jr.”, “A Case for Christmas,” “Bride Wars,” “Twenty-Seven Dresses,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “The Ultimate Gift,” “A Christmas Wish,” “A Christmas Miracle,” “Call Me Mrs. Miracle,” “Trading Christmas,” “Erin Brockovich,” “Enough,” “Pride and Prejudice,” “The Duchess,” “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day,” “Snapped,” “Meet the Parents,” “Storm War,” “Ice Sisters,” “Polar Storm,” “Tornado Terror,” “Path of Destruction,” “Beloved Brat,” “Don’t Bother to Knock,” “The Mummy,” “The Lone Wolf Meets a Lady,” “Untraceable,” “The Stepfather,” “Another Man’s Wife,” “Then Baby will Fall,” “ Best Friends,” “Next Stop, Murder,” “Borderline Murder,” “The Governor’s Wife,” and “They Shoot Divas, Don’t They?”

First Movie
After Georgette left, around 2:45, I turned on LMN. There was no way I’d have watched any of “Bastard out of Carolina” with her still in the apartment, even though by the time she left I’d already missed more than half an hour. ‘Besides, I wasn’t really listening to it; it was just background while I stretched some more.

Phone call
After my bath, I got a call from Georgette saying she was coming around 12:30 or so. She got me some Gold Bond lotion at Wal-Mart Wednesday, so I owe her more than the amount she owed me from the dinner Saturday. She got me a big pump and a smaller tube; a free sample of body wash came with the tube.

What I missed
I missed track of time, so missed the beginning of “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader Murdering Mom,” which started at 4. And I already know I’m going to miss “”Family Sins” at 6, because I’m waiting for Mom to stop by.

Discrimination
Edward was talking about how some of the children in his neighborhood were told by their parents not to talk or play with him “because you’re black.: ‘”Hello? What decade is this?”’ Most of the children play with him anyway, but it’s disturbing to think that racism and discrimination are still such big problems in this day and age. ‘And that doesn’t even touch on the racial factor in my stories!’

Plumbing
Mom still has plumbing issues. The toilet’s wobbly, but at least it doesn’t leak—anymore. ‘No wonder why we had trouble with it overflowing! Edward, when he lived there, would flush down food, deodorant bottles, and who knows what else down the commode as if it were a trash can. Something he didn’t want his father to see in the trash? That’s what the toilet’s for!’ Sort of reminds me of that notice Sue circulated that said, “ Don’t flush anything other than paper down the toilet!” ‘As Mom said, “If you wanted to take that literally—“’
