I used to have no external speakers, just the internal speaker on my laptop, and I couldn't hear a bunch of these without having a perfectly silent house and turning the sound up all the way. Plus, the sound quality was crap. I got external speakers for my birthday a few months ago, and they work AMAZINGLY well. Since I can plug them into my laptop and adjust both the volume control on the laptop AND the individual control on the speakers, I can hear everything now. Also, the sound quality is now spectacular.
To make a long story short, yes, I have tried that, and it does work.

If you want to go the headphones route, I have a few suggestions:
On-ear headphones = good
Around-ear headphones = excellent
iPod earbuds = why do you even have those?

Why do you not like earbuds, DaBomb? In my opinion, it depends on the earbuds. The kind that Apple makes, are crap. Skull-candy, eh, it depends on the type you buy. There are definitely some good ones out there. Walmart even has some great ones. They fit in the ear so perfectly, have that gushy tip so it doesn't hurt your ears, and block out all sound except the crystal clear sound of whatever it is you are listening to.
And I have some speakers at home, and I agree; they work MARVELOUSLY. But as I said, I'm at work... I can't bring that to work. :P
The speakers are mini versions of sub-woofer looking things. You could puncture it if you're not careful. But it sounds great. ;P

My boyfriend bought me a monitor for Christmas last year and the speakers were built into it. They sound good for some things and not so good for other things. The really strange thing is I ended up buying him the same exact monitor and his speakers sound so much louder than mine do. I have to look in the settings, maybe there is some adjustment I can make to make them louder.
