I myself (Keith) was not named for anything in particular, my parents just liked the name, but my wife and I named our second son Conor, after Conchobar mac Nessa the Irish King.

I was named after my dad, uncle and grandpa. I'm female and it was a bit rough when I was a kid but I love my name.

I'm not named for anyone my parents knew, but my father (the family jokester) used to tell me I was named after a dog that happened to be running down the street at the time. :)

The nun in charge of the orphanage where I was born ! Luckily, she had a reasonably normal name, otherwise I might have been Anastasia or Erentrudis or Eusebia or even worse, Mechtildis !

According to my mother, I'm named after country singer Randy Travis. She dreamt of marrying him to make me Travis Travis. She's normally so nice, it's probably her cruelest fantasy!

What a great idea for a thread. These are great stories! Myself...I don't have a story. I was NOT named after anyone in my family on purpose...my mom felt as though there were too many guys named Theodore and James.
Now, my son, Sam, is named after Samuel Clemens, and our daughter Zetta is named after my wife's grandmother. The original Zetta's dad says he came up with the name while "crossin' a fence". That's as far as the story ever goes.

I'm named for my maternal grandmother and my mother's oldest sister (my Godmother) who boith had the same name, for my mother, and for my grandfather (that may sound odd, since I'm female, but every firstborn in my mother's family has borne that name since the 14th century).
My oldest son got my favourite name for a boy, followed by the name of his father and grandfather, and the good old family name that he shares with me. My youngest son got the name of my favourite uncle, my paternal grandfather's name, and my maiden name.

My dad died when I was a baby, he named me and my Mother always said he named me after one of his old girlfriends! I didn't even get a middle name either.

If we are going to include Offspring, my eldest as my favourite name for a boy and my father;s name. My youngest's name was chosen by my wife as her favourite, and his other name is that of a historical "hero" of mine.

I honestly have no idea where my name came from! My grandmother looked at me when I was born (so I've been told) and said shee should be called Naudia! My first daughter is called Nichelle, a variation of Michelle and Tessanne, the name of a girl who assisted me when I was in the hospital and my baby is Neah-Loi, a combination of my two favourite names and Malia from the president's older daughter.

I was named after my uncle. His middle name is my first name, and my middle is my dad's middle name.
My sister was named after my great-grandfather and great-grandmother; her first name is my great-grandfather's middle name, and her middle name is my great-grandmother's middle name.
My parents apparently liked middle names...

Your name's not Malcolm, is it Meathead?
My father's mother died when he was very young - I don't think he remembered much about her, only hearing people talk about her. Anyway, everyone spoke of Maudie and what a lovely woman she'd been so when my sister came along she was given Maud as one of her names. When my brother came along a few years later his names included those of his grandfathers. Scroll forward until my sister is twenty-one, and my teenage brother is rooting through the family documents in search of something he needs for his application to join the Royal Navy. Upstairs there's a new baby, as yet unnamed... "Eureka!" cries my brother, "I found grandmama's birth certificate and she wasn't called Maud at all!" So I am called after my paternal grandmother and my sister, er, isn't - she just has to write Maud whenever she has to write her full name. I know who did better out of it. ;)
