It doesn't cost much to live around here either. In fact, just about everything else you mentioned is similar to this area. All the way down to the good ol' boys (state legislature, anyway). I'm kind of out in the sticks in between but miles away from Greenville and Spartanburg, SC. Spartanburg is worse for homelessness and crime, Greenville's been straightened up fairly well. I do like living in a state that basically leaves you alone (no state inspection, low taxes etc). Fuel prices are usually among the lowest in the country, too.

I live in Melbourne, Australia and whilst its a great place to live, real estate is hugely expensive, and the cost of day to day living is irrationally high by comparison to other parts of the country and similar places in the world.

I live in Norway, so everything is expensive! Even things like petrol and fish that they produce that you would kind of think might be a bit less. No such luck.

I live in Dublin, Ireland and the cost of everything varies on the area of the city you happen to be eg the cost of a pint of beer could be €4.50 in a local bar in the suburbs but €7 in Temple Bar (tourists beware)

I live in the country on 5 acres . We have our own garden and a variety of fruit, nut, and citrus trees. We raise our own animals for meat and chickens for eggs. The neighbors are similar. Most of them have 2 1/2 acres. Our neighbor to the north is a Navy Officer, one of the neighbors to the south is a retired Navy officer. The other one works for a large tractor company and his wife is a school teacher. I have great neighbors.
