It has seemed, over the past weeks, that some of our authors (specifically some of our racers) have had a bit of trouble acclimatizing to a slower pace. This is a reasonable thing to say-- I've had the pleasure of pushing you guys around FunTrivia for a good couple months (and longer) to write way out of your comfort zones. Some people just want more. Luckily, I do too.

That's why we're going for a FunTrivia Sprint.

This Sprint, like the Race, is not for the author who isn't ready to get their hands dirty and explore new grounds...quickly. The rules are as follows:

  • Wes and I have both created sprint courses; both are different.

  • Sprinters will be able to complete the Sprint as individuals or in teams of two. Once you figure out if you're going alone or in a double, you will need to choose one of the following options:
    * Normal Pairs: One member of the pair must complete either K or W.
    * Normal single: Play either K or W for each round. You choose which one you want.
    * Hardcore single: Choose K or W on the first task, stick with it for the rest of the game.
    * Hardcore pairs: On each set, one must complete K and one W.

  • Sprinters will receive tasks via the Lounge here-- even if you're not sprinting you'll be able to see the tasks as they appear.

  • There are a predetermined amount of tasks and all sprinters will receive the clues at the same time. This is not a race against competitors; it is a race for yourselves. This leads into the most important point.

  • Authors will have five days to write the quiz. This does not include queue times. The timer begins when the task is announced and ends when the quiz goes online.

The tasks will vary in many ways-- some will take authors to categories they never believed they would be able to visit and others may involve some of the site's most popular authors and quizzes.

If you wish to sign up, let us know here.
**If you wish to attempt the Hardcore options, please note whether you would like to select set A or set B. You will not know whose set is whose until we begin the sprint.

The Sprint will commence on April 15th.

I've been sitting here thinking normal or HC and I've decided.

Put me in as a single regular please Kyle.

    Regular single please, Kyle :)

I have visitors for the next week so glad it isn't starting till after they've gone.

Oh, I've thought and thought, but I don't dare sign up since I'm still traveling and will be for a while yet. Not everywhere, particularly in Navajo country and such, has WiFi. Besides, after touring and all, I'll probably be too tired to do anything. I haven't done a quiz since I left home the 21st and I'm "three" behind on single questions.

So, I'll be on the sidelines cheering you on. The best - or at least the loudest - cheerleader you ever had!

As an employee of said establishment, I'm adequately trained to prepare such an order. ;p

I always laugh when they say "regular or diet coke?" :-D Given the nature of the rest of the order, diet coke tends to be a wee bit "too little too late" lol

Happy Easter Kyle and Wes (and everybody of course). This sounds like a great challenge, but some details are about as clear as mud to me (I can be quite obtuse at times lol). So I have some questions ...
    ______________________________________

"Normal Pairs: One member of the pair must complete either K or W"

    - first off, do BOTH members of a "normal" team have to submit a quiz for EACH task? Or does the team, as a whole, just submit one each week? In otherwords is the expectation 12 quizzes or 24 by the end of the sprint?
    - if 12 is the case, then does each member have to submit 6?
    - does this mean that over the course of the 12 weeks, one of the two members has to submit ALL of their (own?) quizzes in either K or W?
    _________________________________

"Hardcore pairs: On each set, one must complete K and one W."
    - I gather that in 12 weeks, 24 quizzes have to be submitted for HC, but according to Wesley's post, each week the "team" can choose - but does that mean that EACH member of the team can choose which "way" they go? Or does that mean that for the same task, they both have to submit to the SAME pathway?
    - you've said that pairs can contribute to each other's quizzes, but can that be taken further? As in, if one of the team members is away for a week (for whatever reason), can the other team member submit a quiz for BOTH team members and still have it count in the sprint?
    - if they CAN'T do that, then there is no advantage to being part of a pairing unless both members can be absolutely sure they'll both be available for 12 weeks (crap happens, family members of participants pass away, job commitments weigh heavily, vacation etc etc.

I guess my main question is, what really are the advantages/disadvantages of choosing one of the four possibilities in the "long run"? They all sound like they're the same, but aren't teams/pairs at a disadvantage as to the "clock" (am assuming that some sort of combined time is used for pairings).

Also, although you cannot possibly "win" if you don't submit on time, does that also mean you can't "finish"? And if you're playing on a team and one person submits late, does that mean the other person can't finish (overall)? Are teams going to be put in a different grouping (as to scoring) than the singles?

Sorry if my questions seem obvious to other folks lol

jakeroo, you questions don't seem obvious at all to me, and I'm glad you asked them because they hadn't occurred to me, but now I'm interested in the answers!

12 quizzes by the pair although if you want to write both tasks during one week, you will be given the better of the two scores.

    - if 12 is the case, then does each member have to submit 6?

You can make that up for yourselves, but each member will need to provide at least one quiz. If one does nothing, the one who did all of it is simply a single winner.

    - does this mean that over the course of the 12 weeks, one of the two members has to submit ALL of their (own?) quizzes in either K or W?

You can mix and match whatever you want. Do K1, W2, W3, both4, K5, ... whatever floats your boat. As long as your pair has one qualifying quiz in each week, you win.

No, you can choose every week who wants to be the K and who the W. (If you were fixed from start to end, you'd essentially be playing two single HC games). Of course you can impose further restrictions on yourselves if you want as an added challenge (e.g. decide on round 1 and then flip on every further week).

    - you've said that pairs can contribute to each other's quizzes, but can that be taken further? As in, if one of the team members is away for a week (for whatever reason), can the other team member submit a quiz for BOTH team members and still have it count in the sprint?

I see no problems with that if there's a good reason for it (i.e. "I don't like this week's topics" isn't one). It would however be nice if the team member who skipped a week would then make up that deficit at the earliest possible opportunity (announcing the intent before seeing any clues) so you get back to 12-12 in the end.

    - if they CAN'T do that, then there is no advantage to being part of a pairing unless both members can be absolutely sure they'll both be available for 12 weeks (crap happens, family members of participants pass away, job commitments weigh heavily, vacation etc etc.)

Well, yes. Team HC is supposed to be a serious challenge. With the above, you do have some leeway in the game which I hope covers these situations. Also, if one partner of the team needs to leave the game completely, the other can of course still complete a solo normal (having met all conditions for that one until that point).
