Subject: Advice For Bachelors
Date: Apr 06 12

This my second attempt at starting a blog. My first was less than successful, as it was deleted after one day, which may be a record. This time I will avoid anything even remotely political.

Note: this is a blog directed towards men. Women are are welcome to read it, of course, but my audience is intended to be those fortunate men who, like myself, have avoided the snare of matrimony.

My inspiration for this blog is the fact that I have of late been suffering from a potentially life-threatening disease called "the common cold." During my convalescence I have been re-reading P.J. O'Rourke's essential tome, "The Bachelor Home Companion." If you are male, unmarried, and over 18, you need to own this book. It contains sound advice on many subjects. It occured to me, however, that it was last revised nearly 20 years ago, so it is somwhat dated, and some important topics are not covered at all.

I cannot begin to match Mr. O'Rourke's profound wisdom, nor the scope of his endevour. But I hope that I can offer some advice that will prove useful to the unmarried 21st century male.

Note again: as I am (by the grace of God) an American, many of my topics will be USA specific. If you are living in New Zealand, for instance, and seek advice on sheep herding, I am afraid my insights will prove to be of little use to you. Since many aspects of the unfettered joys of bachelorhood are universal, however, it is my hope that all may benefit to some degree.

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Creedy, your lack of faith is disappointing. All one need do is watch Diora's scene in "The Wedding Crashers" to confirm that her assets are truly a gift of the Almighty.

Mariska Hargitay? She is way past her expiration date. Oh, well, de gustibus non est disputandum, as the Romans say.

Past her expiration date!?, Please, a woman is not a carton of milk, they are more like a fine wine, aged to perfection, a culmination of life experience that makes the tasting all the more exquisite, but like wine one must never overindulge, that's where the trouble starts, if you want more...it's going to cost you. They don't call it a honeytrap for nothing.
Rachel Welch, Sophia Loren, Halle Berry, Isabella Rosellini, Vanessa Williams,...

AntonLaVey Oh man. Daver? You would turn down Mariska? She gets better looking each year it seems.

C30 Actually met the lady - Jayne Mansfield that is.......she came onboard HMS SURPRISE whilst the ship was in Venice.
As Duty Gangway Staff, I had the "duty" of offering the lady my hand to ensure she did not slip..........."muscle bosun" she had in town was not impressed though!
I should say, that she had a very pretty face.......well I should, but as she was almost wearing a bikini at the time, my eyes didn't get as far as her face!

Perfectly true story folks - Venice Film Festival 1963...or may have been 1962 - I was in that ship June 62-Sept 63.

C30 for "town", read "tow"

trojan11 When I was young.....when was that? I really had a thing for Gina Lollobrigida, thought that she was almost as good looking as a 105mm on my Chieftain. Odd thing was, no one else seemed to like her. It was all Sofia Loren, Welch, Mansfield etc.

I thought Gina was gorgeous (and quite a good actress in comedic roles, perhaps suprinsingly lol). Catherine deNeuve as well. But I'm a woman, so what do I know lol

trojan11 Papua New Guinea, that's the place for bachelors that feel the need to become fathers. The system there is, or was, Long Huts, communal living but not between the sexes. A male takes a wife, bonks, she produces a noisy squealing heap of unpleasantness, he has nothing to do with it, or her...at all. She looks after the child for the first seven years. If it's a female it remains with the mother. If male the father takes over at the age of seven years and. teaches the child how to hunt and survive, etc.
At no time do males/females live together. They live separately in long huts of reasonably close proximity. It is forbidden for a member of one sex to enter the long hut of the other sex. In this way they live as mutually supporting groups.

You all forgot Pamela Anderson, I think she could match any of them.

Looks like skinny gals miss out. So much for their daft eating habits. All the appeal of a container of cutlery.

I agree with Mommakat.. don't think in some cases that intelligence plays a major role either !

I don't even want to enter a comment about Pamela A. Even though she was born in my country, I'd put her somewhere about 350th of the top 100 Canadian celebs LOL

I do believe, ladies, that the vote is unanimous.

My mother used to have a plaque on the kitchen wall that read "Kissin' don't last, good cookin' do".

Very wise advice. Except I'd add, "But try to marry a chef if you can".
