I wrote this poem the other day, and thought a number of you might identify with it:

Discrimination

Discrimination is
Synonymous with
Injustice, hardship, brutality.

Discrimination is
When prejudice
Divides us,
Tears us,
Flattens us.

Prejudice means
Dreams had
Destroyed, trampled
Under feet
So thick
With grime
Itâ??s hard
To see.

Discrimination can
Affect some
Hard, others
Not so much.

Discrimination is
An ugly
Sore, cancer
Of the
Worst kind.

Discrimination colours
Oneâ??s perception,
Worldview, interaction.

Discrimination interprets
All acts,
Marrs all things,
Distorts everyone.

Discrimination clouds
The judgment,
Leading one
To do things
That seemed impossible,
Things that later
Make no sense,
And cause
Naught but regret.

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Greatguggly You did a great job. In my job, I interact with all types of people--white, black, Hispanic...and a lot of poor people. I've always tried not to judge a book by its cover but when I see some of these people come out of their house to get in my van I know what the prejudiced statements of a bigot would be. I've heard most of it. Then, as I get to talking to these people, a sense of anger at those attitudes comes over me. You just never know who someone is until you start to interact with them. The bigot may very well be insulting someone who would lay down their life for him. There's good and bad in every race, color and creed. Opinions of others MUST be based on the individual and not a category.

So, I can relate to the poem from that perspective and, again, nice job.

I'm so glad that you post it! I can relate to the poem as well as all people that have a disability.

Agreed, nicely written. I like your point that it affects some more than others; very true. Thanks for sharing this.

Very well written and it certainly says it all. I agree with the others that have responded.

For sure, I know a few people that should really read this.

lesley153 Well said, J - and you too, Rick:
"There's good and bad in every race, color and creed."
Course there is!

Forget better nature: on a purely selfish note, you can shoot yourself in the foot by making snap judgements.

Years ago, I heard a nice story about a smelly old tramp who went to a new car show. He wandered round, looking at a lot of different cars, but kept coming back to one of the most luxurious, and - of course - most expensive.
"I really like the look of that one."
"Yeah, sure you do. Har har."
The "tramp" dug out his wallet, and pulled out enough cash to buy the car.

As far as I know, that's where the story ended. He bought it, hopped in, and drove off. For me, it would have been a lot better if he'd run over the salesman who laughed at him. Is that naughty of me?
