I don't think that happens anymore...the words of the hour have not been similar lately. The ones who got this badge back then sure had it easy..

Is there anywhere I can check how many correctly guessed words I have (basically my progress towards the fortune-teller)?

Has anyone noticed that in the past few days most of the words are very unfamiliar to most people, even if they have a large vocabulary? Scientific words, words that seem almost made up, inticate and contrived endings to words etc.
What happened to real, ordinary words or compound words, as there used to be? Does anyone else find this to be so?
These obscure words can be very frustrating.

There are a few ways round that. There have been plenty of ordinary words as well, prune, boutique and basics in the current list, and in fact pr- words have by far the most possible results so anyone getting them (except the pru) is extremely lucky.
I can't retrieve earlier words but haven't seen any fewer compared to normal, but as long as you have a decent dictionary you can just open it on the relevant page and (oh dear, bang goes a method) write the odd ones down in advance to save you picking them out in a rush. If you play regularly plus the word wizard you memorise a ton of them anyway, but I don't think anyone who wins using those words does it without one or the other unless they are working in that field as a few are.
I am always interested in science so know many medical and similar terms so all the -itis and -omas etc are bread an butter to me as I don't need the dictionary, as are things like poetic or technical terms to different enthusiasts. I only use the dictionary when I run out of words as it's more fun without it if possible, but you can't get neurogenic or anadiplosis very often without it or they'd hardly ever get guessed. In fact the only words which don't are ones where you still have tens or more of possible words left after the last clue, so are far too many duds than bullets. And some of the words not in my dictionary are in word wizard so learnt the dacoit/dakoit family and many others there.

I just played Crystal Ball last hour. I was listed as the first person to guess the winning word but someone else got the credit. Why? Does this happen often? Has anyone else experienced this?

Welcome to the Club. You are no orphan. I have lost count of the number of times it has happened to me and the latest was today when I know I was the first as I checked but someone else got the credit.

Thank you for responding. When I entered the word the game indicated that there were no other entries yet so I can't help but feel I won. Now that I know wins are awarded unfairly I've lost any motivation I had to play it.

If multiple people guess the winning word, then the winner is random selected. That seems to be how these things work: Nemesis in the Daily Challenge, Lucky Ducky badge, Perfect Score badge, etc.

Well, it's not a matter of them being chosen unfairly, but of them being chosen randomly from those who guessed correctly. Whether you think that is fair or unfair has a lot to do with whether or not your life allows you to check in early in the hour.

When it used to be the first one then it meant the game was effectively over after a potentially very short time. This way means you know your guess always counts before 45 minutes regardless, and if it's correct then it's a random shot who gets it. It's been discussed at great length in the forums and fairly agreed the alternatives are worse, eg 45 people getting a badge when the word begins in kw or tc with about three possible choices available. One win per game is always guaranteed regardless and it's very rare to get runner up unless it's a word without that many alternatives.

Agony and Satguru, you can pontificate all you like but in my book it is first up best dressed, and as for saying the game is over - no one knows that before the initial 45 minutes is up and many times the game IS over as someone has been declared the winner.
But it does not matter how much it is discussed unfortunately the status quo remains and we either like it or lump it.

So why raise a fuss afterwards when the rules/guidelines are clearly displayed for all to see before playing?

I agree Mommakat. For me there's no incentive to play if winners who guess correctly are chosen randomly, especially when I've made a point of remembering to get there at the outset. I equate it to a bad carnival midway game you've taken the time to play but the game is set up so you're unlikely to win. Unless it's really enjoyable, why waste the time?
In the past I was awarded credit, but I've misunderstood how the game works. I see CB as flawed and an exercise in frustration, much like the badges repeatedly awarded to the same Champions making it too difficult for lower ranking members to win. I spend a lot of time on FT every day so I'm okay with having one less game to play. :)

The rules are contradictory. While one sentence states the winner is chosen randomly, the last sentence clearly says the first person to guess the word wins. Maybe that last sentence needs to be removed.

No contradiction. The last sentence pertains to what happens int he event that no one guesses the correct word within the first 45 minutes.
If I quote it here but break it into two paragraphs it's more obvious:
For the first 45 minutes of the hour, each player gets 1 blind guess. At 45 minutes past the hour, we award the winner if someone blindly guessed the word. If more than one player chose the word, the winner is randomly chosen from those players (others are 'runners up').
If no one has guessed the word once the 45 minute winner-check occurs, the list of all guesses made so far is displayed and all players immediately get 5 bonus guesses. The first player to guess the word before the hour ends wins!

I think the dissatisfaction comes from not understanding the rules before playing.
We all have 45 mins to enter a first guess, and that any duplicates will mean one random winner will be chosen, where's the beef?
If it was arranged so that only the first correct guess could win then it would turn into an almighty scrum at the start and become useless for anyone arriving even 10 minutes late. The initial scrum would probably crash browsers etc anyway. This way, the game is open to more players.

Chavs, if you click on '(Top 100)', at the top of the 'Most Wins' list, you can not only see the top 100, but also all the words *you* have made. If you are not in the top 100, you can count your words to see how far along you are :-)
