I don’t know what I’m doing here anymore, not since Quentin was killed. I don’t even know who or how, but the where is easy: Stinokia. I told him not to go, to stay at the School, that somebody else could find out whatever had to be found out… but he ignored me. Quentin was good at that when he put his mind to something. And now I’m not sure I’m cut out for this teaching stuff. Rumors are spreading that I’m losing my touch, and I know that I am… but what am I supposed to do?

Whatever was I thinking when I decided to get pregnant at my age? I’m too young to be raising a kid! I’m still one myself, for Protector’s sake!
It would be all right, I guess, is my little one wasn’t such a… brat! He doesn’t listen, has this fixation with explosives… and he knows how to push everyone’s buttons! More than once, he’s provoked someone around here to violence. It’s like he enjoys pain or something.

Why is everyone so mean to me? All I wanna do is have fun! What’s so wrong with that?
It’s gotten to the point where I get beat up every day now. I act like it don’t bother me, almost like I welcome each new pounding. Truth is, I’m not sure what to think anymore. It’s almost like I needn’t say anything anymore to earn a beating, like all I need do is show my face somewhere. What is it about me that makes folks so mean? Even Mommy, though she don’t hit me. I guess she does one worse: she yells. Raises her voice whenever I come into the room. For no damned reason. Oops, that’s a word I shouldn’t say. Need to act more like I’m five. And how the hell am I supposed to do that? Rteachers try to keep kids cussing around me, but it happens daily. What’s the big deal?

Oh, how I wish there were at least one person my own age instead of all these grown-ups. Then again, it is a prison, so I guess that’s why I feel out of place here. Why did they put me in here with Mommy? What did she do to get herself locked up? Is being her daughter my only crime? And when will the guards come to dispose of me, like they did with her?
I guess it’s a small comfort to know the rumor that they throw the dead body in the cell with the living relatives is untrue. Then again, is it really? Maybe it’s just early for that, and pretty soon they’ll toss in Mommy’s bloated corpse for me to…
I feel like I’ve walked straight into a nightmare, and am sinking farther and farther into it. I want to get out, but haven’t the slightest notion how. I yearn for someone to show me the way, but I don’t think that’ll ever happen.

The details are fuzzy, primarily because I was just young when they happened. All the times I’ve struggled to understand in the passing years… but I can’t.
Here are the facts. My uncle Viktorio (don’t ask me to do that “great” nonsense—first, he doesn’t deserve it, and second, it just confuses me. I may be an intelligent wizard, more so than some, but that doesn’t diminish the truth… No comfortable way to say this, so I’ll just spit it out: my uncle Viktorio’s evil. Fortunately for us, he’s not so great in the brains department. Unfortunately, he doesn’t need them—not with… more on that later. The only thing worth of note here and now is he’s evil… and he killed my mother, right in front of my dad so he could see how useless his Powers were. And this… caused him… to… … …

VETRETHEYNA'S TRIUMPH 1

The Queen of Stinokia was young and beautiful, but it was all on the surface. None but the most corrupt of her subjects liked the woman. In fact, most referred to her as the “Mistress of Misfortune” or “Lady Misfortune.” Any problem the kingdom faced was inevitably HER responsibility, if only in part. There were some things the people disagreed on, but none involved her cruel nature or the injustices she inflicted on those she considered her enemies.
Those “enemies” were to be found first and foremost within the Queen’s own family. Her parents had been gone for years, but she had two siblings, one older and one younger. The older, Jordyn, had just recently become a teacher at the School for Gifted dYoungsters. The Queen, whose name was Natalya, didn’t especially like her sister, but neither did she consider her a threat. Her younger brother, though… HE was to be feared above all others.

Many times in the past, he and Natalya had bickered over various things, and now she was bitter toard him. Jordyn O’Connor let the door slide softly closed behind her. Her brother was in one of his moods, the kind that meant he didn[‘t listen to ANYTHING anyone else had to say. She sighed, looking around quickly, breaking into a grin when she spotted him. His shoulders were hunched and he was scowling as if he’d lost his best friend.
Slowly, she eased away from the door and went to sit aside him. “I had another dream last night,” she said in a quiet voice.
“I know,” he replied without looking at her. Jordyn was taken by surprise, but managed to restrain herself before she blurted out anything stupid. “I know,” he repeated, “because I did, too.” The last few words were so quiet she had to strain to hear them.

The Queen of Stinokia put a restraining hand on her younger brother’s chest. “You shouldn’t have come, Quentyn,” she stated flatly, staring fixedly into his broad-set brown eyes.
“I had to,” he began feebly, then fell silent.
“You wished to speak to me,” his sister said, chuckling darkly, “about a matter of great import. Unfortunately,” she snapped her fingers in his face, “you blundered straight into a trap from which you cannot escape.”
The 18-year-o ld commanded his muscles to stay relaxed, told his body to do nothing that would betray his terror to this woman, but they didn’t listen. The Queen of Stinokia watched him, her head tilted to one side, and as his eyes clouded with terror she lifted her head and howled like an enraptured child. “Ooh, this is the most fun I’ve had in ages,” she giggled.

Stories vary, but some dedicated individuals are compiling a list of such accounts.

PLAYING BOTH SIDES

There is none quite so dangerous as a Dark One whose loyalties seem to be in question, who is most certainly evil but seems to be waiting for something.
Exactly what caused the scism within Cehrvanakavreyda is unclear, but one faction remains “sympathetic” to the Universal Organization, Qatavoreya Univahris, while the other just goes along as before. I can’t say I understand it. I’ve given up trying to, as it makes my head hurt.
One of the demons appears to be “playing for each side,” calling the shots as it were as it relates to his interests. First, he orders this raid on a palace in the heart of Scenoria. He must have a contact, but he or she remains a mystery, even after several years. Not that it matters, as long as the investigation marches on.
What makes less sense than the raid itself has always been how one child was taken and not the other. Most people assume Ohrelio was snatched because he’s been named heir of Scenoria, whereas his brother stands to inherit the kingdom their mother ran. Regardless, it was a while before anyone knew where the three-year-old was being held, and just what was happening to him.
