First of all, what's up with the phrase "rules are rules"? It's either said by those who are too strict with their "enforcement of said "rules," or they're too lax.

Second I'd like to thank everyone reading this--and assure you, yet again, that my previous blogs having been deleted are completely and categorically my fault. **You did nothing *wrong.

Which brings me to another rant: why is it some people (nobody on here, I'm sure) can't accept responsibility for*anything. "If blame is to be going around... just don't look at me."

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

“Members of the Assembly,” he growled, “I needn’t tell you how delicate a situation this is, for these two”—and he pointed to the twins—“are only half Scenorian.” At this, he turned and glared at the first speaker. “We have allowed,” he continued, gazing at each of those assembled, “to let you”—meaning the Scenorian Delegation—“torture these prisoners with the express understanding that **they are *ours to deal with as we see fit!” He then turned to glare at another demon, one who hadn’t risen but who looked as if he’d gladly give the second speaker a piece of his mind. “Oh, yes, Aleksandr, do stand—and let the Assembly in on *your intentions!”

In doing as he was told, Aleksandr showed himself to be of medium height, but an air of ruthlessness about him that left everyone else in the room—save for the second speaker—quavering in fear. “Under Xynoran Law, these *devils could have been exterminated without all this *fuss,” he raged.
“Yes, and we’ve been around and around all this,” shot back the first speaker, shooting to his feet.
“Calm yourself,” spat the second demon before turning back to Aleksandr. “You’re forgetting one key thing, My friend: had the twins been *Xynoran, you could deal with them as you saw fit. However, as neither one has even a *trace of Xynoran blood, **you and yours had absolutel y no *right to hold them in your capital.” He paused, sensing an objection, and held up a hand. “But you, **you would *argue that you’re only *half Xynoran; that, since the other half is ‘Qiryntian it gives you the justification to **crush these demonic *impostors without having to deal with anything so pesky as a *law! That is why we have charged them, that is why you are not in charge of their fate, and *that is why they haven’t been executed yet!”
“Why not schedule Orelio’s,” the first speaker did, inserting an argument that had been voiced at least once before. “Half Qiryntian he may be, but he’s never set foot on the soil of that kingdom—unlike Orseviyto over there—“

The twins stared at each other, their faces white as paper. “Protector no,” Alonso whispered brokenly.
The second speaker thought for a moment, then nodded decisively. “Done!”
As the guards rushed forward to haul him away, Alonso’s knees buckled from beneath him and his chest constricted painfully. “No,” he moaned as rough hands seized him, wrenching the two twins apart.
Ontario watched helplessly, knowing in his heart that he’d seen his twin for the last time. Alonso would be sentenced to death in the morning, if not later today. Numbly, he saw a group of demons boring down on him, but he didn’t care. Nothing mattered to him anymore, not after seing his twin dragged away by the hair.
“You’re coming with us,” muttered a low, guttural voice. Ontario stared, too shaken to fathom who had spoken. He didn’t even remember being transported to Qirynse. He vaguely heard the same guttural voice telling him he was still a prisoner, at least for the time being, but once arrangements could be made both he and Alonso would be freed. Whatever, was the only thought in the boy’s mind. What did it matter now? What did anything matter?

Ontario remembered being shoved roughly through a door, hearing the bolt slid shut behind him. And then he realized, some things still *were important to him. “I can’t allow the fear inside me to trample over everything I hold close to my heart.” And with that thought fresh in his mind, he plunged into a troubled sleep filled with condemnation, regret and untold agony.

DRAFT NINE
======
His blue eyes, the shade of crystal, widened in surprise. His mind reeled with the speed of it all. “It’s too much,” he mumbled fretfully.
A key turned in the lock, and he scrambled into a sitting position, breathing hard. His eyes invariably took in the crumpled heap in the center of the room that was his identical twin. Apart from the rise and fall of his chest, there was nothing to indicate he still lived.

The door swung open, and Orseviyto clutched his inert sibling to his chest. “I won’t let them,” he vowecd vehemently. He wondered what he could do to stop them if he tried. The truth was, not much of anything, and it hurt him more than anything that had come before. It was his job, as the older twin by a few hours, to watch over and protect Orehlio from any and all dangers. At least that’s what he told himself. He knew the Protector played a role, but still…

Somahri Javiteya paused on the other side of the cell door. The prisoners had been through so much already. He wished he could make it easier, which is why he’d fought to become their guard. Still, it seemed whatever he did wasn’t enough. The one boy who was still conscious was deathly afraid of him, shrinking back from Somahri as if from a plague. “Protector, help them,” he whispered before pressing his hand once more against the cell.

WHAT'S MY "FAVORITE" VILLAIN *DOING* IN HERE?

“What’s the point,” Chendorri Dorsevahrtren demanded for the fourth time that day, “whether the Xynorans deal the fatal blow or whether we—“
Vincent Cobeyra cut him off impatiently. “We’ve been over this a hundred times already: NOW IS NOT THE TIME!”
“But I dion’t—“ the Scenorian began, before he was again interrupted. Cobeyra twisted around to see who had just spoken, and felt a smile spread across his demonic features. Qydra Assa Voliyno and himself had never gotten along, but at least in this they were agreed.
“Our Xynoran friends,” he began silkily, “have made a mess of things. Which is EXACTLY why the Assembly is split the way it is!”
“You think those Ordevahran BRATS should have been formally charged,” Dorsevahrtren snapped.
“The difference here,” Cobeyra interrupted, “is the way our organizations see justice.” He paused, glaring at Dorsevahrtren as if expecting another objection. “Qatavoreya Univahris, which SHOULD cover Xynoran territory, states that ANY AND ALL CAPTIVES MUST BE FORMALLY CHARGED BEFORE BEING SUBJECTED TO WHATEVER TORTURES SEEM NECESSARY. This rule was broken when it came to the Ordevahrans; they were robbed of even the basic rights ALL OF US have: most importantly, the right to information. They had a right to know WHY they were being held; BEFORE anyone stripped their bodies of ANYTHING!”

I THINK I UNDERSTAND NOW
======
Again he paused, this time shifting his gaze to Qydra. “I wasn’t there, or I’D have put a stop to it. YOU, on the other hand, WERE. For reasons of your own, you WATCHED as your cousins’ organs were removed one by one. ONLY WHEN IT APPEARED OREHLIO WOULD DIE did you FINALLY step in to prevent further injustice. ONLY THEN WAS I NOTIFIED. I MAY NOT live in Xynor, but I am STILL a native Xynoran. I may have CHOSEN to become the Military Commander of the Scenorian Forces, but I am STILL Xynoran.” Again, Cobeyra’s eyes pinned Dorsevahrtren where he sat. “You asked WHY we’re coaxing good health back into those young bodies when we fully intend to execute them. I HOPE that question has been laid to rest.”

Qydra nervously smoothed back his hair and scanned the Tribunal. “I don’t see Mother or Aleksandr here,” he muttered angrily.
“They’re afraid to face us,” Cobeyra commented.

DRAFT TEN'
=======
Vincent Cobeyra pounded his fist on the table, effectively ending the discussion. “We wouldn’t even BE here had the Xynorans not decided to alter the law,” he boomed. “It is because THEY chose to torture the prisoners without reading even the most ridiculous, far fetched, of charges that we’re gathered here today. IF THE JOB HAD BEEN DONE RIGHT, the twins would be DEAD, and there would BE no issue!”
“But,” an angry voice rang out, “they were very nearly dead UNTIL YOU RUINED IT ALL!”
“Ah, Chendorri,” Vincent commented lightly, “HAVEN’T I JUST EXPLAINED WHY I INTERVENED? DID I NOT MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?”

Orseviyto Ordevahran struggled into a sitting position and forced his eyes to open. His breathing, quick and shallow, bothered him, as did the fevered feel of his tortured dreams. His eyes, blue like crystal, took in the filthy cell around him, the bloody figure lying motionless in the corner. For a moment, his heart stopped beating, until he noticed the slight rise and fall of his twin’s chest, and he felt life surge through his body once more. “HOW MUCH LONGER,” he wondered dully, “CAN I GO ON LIKE THIS?”
Suddenly he fell back, utterly drained of all energy. “THERE’S NO USE FIGHTING,” he thought, and surrendered himself to the blackness swirling around his consciousness.

“I’m asking you,” the demon muttered sullenly, “not as one who means to corrupt you, but as one who wishes things had been done differently.” Xiveydo Javiteya paused, unused to acting like this. It was contrary to his nature, he kept telling himself, to seek out his younger brother for anything. “I’d do it myself, but I fear my touch would only kill him.”
“Then you could become the sole executioner,” Somahri remarked dryly.
Xiveydo grimaced. “We still haven’t charged the prisoners,” he pointed out, “and as I’ve explained—“
“Oh, yes,” Somahri retorted sarcastically, “you WANT TO DO THINGS RIGHT this time. No matter it involves the twins suffering more than they should have to!”
“The Xynorans acted without authorization,” Xiveydo muttered.
“WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION,” his younger brother mocked, “how that must rankle, to know your own countrymen have disobeyed protocol!”
“Will you help or not,” the older Javiteya asked.
“I’ll see what I can do,” Somahri muttered, stepping back a little in order to see his sibling’s face better.
“That’s all I ask,” Xiveydo muttered, frowning darkly and turning on his heel.

DRAFT ELEVEN

Alonso Gonzales cursed inwardly. What was he supposed to do? He and his identical twin were in the heart of Enemy territory, surrounded by demons so ruthless as to be virtually unstoppable. Of course, some Dark Ones were weaker than others, and easier to deal with, but they had the misfortune to deal with what had to be one of the strongest teams in Dark history. So long as They worked together… The young man grimaced. Knowing how to defeat one’s enemies was only half the battle. The truth was, there was an uneasy cooperation between them so long as their rivals still drew breath. Worse, Alonso thought, was the fact that he was here in this cell, struggling not to black out, while those MONSTERS had his brother. WHAT AM I TO DO, he asked himself yet again.

The Fairy Empress straightened up, having finished securing the prisoner to the table. He’d struggled as hard as he could at first, but had soon tired, and now lay limply with his blue eyes staring up at the ceiling. It pleased her to hear the effort it took for him to take each breath. It was music to her ears. After so many years, he was finally at her mercy. “You should have died eleven years ago,” she whispered, “let the fever stop your heart forever. But, no matter.” [AN ALLUSION TO "ABDUCTION"] She reached out to trail a finger along the contours of his muscular chest. At She smiled sweetly as he shuddered at her touch, his crystal blue eyes plainly showing how terrified he felt. “Don’t worry,” she told the young man, “I’ll not hurt you. Surgeon wants you unharmed until he gets here, so that’s the way it must be.” Again, his body shuddered, but he was somehow able to regain his composure enough to mask his expression. “It shouldn’t be long,” she continued, her eyes never leaving his. As always, his lips remained stubbornly locked together. She felt an overwhelming urge to punch him, but restrained herself. Her boss would be furious if she lost her temper for even an instant and messed up his plans for the prisoner.

Cheveyo Ramirez didn’t mince words, not if he could help it. “Emergency Council,” he announced brusquely as he passed his younger brother 1and the Head Teacher.
A few seconds later, they joined him in the room set aside for such meetings. After Maria closed the door behind her and sat down, they began discussing possible rescue strategies. For the most part, Cheveyo was content to listen. Volunteering information didn’t come easily to the nineteen-year-old, especially at times when he was uncertain what course of action to take.

After the Council had finished its business of the day, Maria slid into the seat next to him. “None of us are sure what should be done,” she began softly, as if reading his thoughts. Cheveyo couldn’t help feeling surprised at the insight shown by this young woman. She couldn’t have been more than two years his junior! “Sixteen,” she said, as if reading his mind AGAIN, “and what does age matter? We’re all just struggling to do the best we can with what we’ve been given. Nobody’s better than anyone else just because they happen to have more magic than others.” He nodded, thinking how much he agreed with almost everything she said. “Besides,” she continued, magical ability isn’t always the answer. Power can only do so much.”

Aleksandr Ardeko strolled into the Surgical Center and grinned down at his patient. “You ready,” he asked, taking in the young man’s bound and battered form. They’d had to be rough at first, to get him here, but the demon known as The Surgeon was glad to see he’d suffered no additional harm.
The prisoner just stared at Surgeon as if he’d lost his mind. When had he learned to mask his discomfort so well? Not that it matterer, and anyway there was no way he could hide everything. Every now and then, a muscle somewhere would twitch, giving his nerves away.

DRAFT TWELVE
======
The prisoners were brought before the Assembly amid much shouting and pointing. It wasn’t hard to see why: not often was it that captives as young as this were convicted for any crime, let alone the one the rumors spoke of. Could it be? Well, we were about to find out.
Both boys had their hands shackled behind them, but whereas one kept his eyes trained resolutely on the ground, the other gazed around defiantly, as if begging someone to do something about it. For a moment, his eyes locked upon mine, and the raw emotion I read in his is one of those things that will never leave me. It was the look of one who is haunted by a truth so monstrous, or an evil so horrific, that it overshadows everything else. It was the look of one who knows his time in this life is fast approaching its climax. It was the look of one who’s been repeatedly beaten down in life, and is now so crushed by it that future resistance is no longer a consideration. It was the look of one who is resigned to his fate, yet at the same time is pleading with the Universe at large to help his cause. It was the look of one hunted down and trapped, knowing full well he had nowhere to go. It was the look of one who isn’t concerned so much for himself, but for those he values most. It was the look of a man who has struggled to find meaning in life’s cruelties, only to find there is no sense to be had. Just a fleeting glance, but it will follow me to my grave. I will carry that image on my eyelids until my dying day, when I will either pass it to someone else or let it take me down to the abyss.
